Open water swimming has got so popular round here that my local lake ( owsc.co.uk ) has just announced they'll be open for swimming on another evening. Currently they do Monday evening, Wednesday morning and Sunday morning, but they've just announced a Thursday evening session too Just lately Monday evenings have been nearly as busy as the start of a triathlon! They've opened a new car park (although I cycle there), and a cafe. |

Nice day for a swim, the water was warm enough for me to ditch the wetsuit |

Luxury temperature! Lovely way to pass an evening. I did what I was told & got in the sea earlier, left goggles, hat & towel on the steps at start of run & returned to find tide perfect to step in, except it I took 5 minutes to do that. Had the sea to myself, in for about 20 minutes including the 5! Lovely, of course, what took me so long |

Did my first OWS in Ripon Lake last night, water temp was 24c. Still wore a wetsuit though, loads of weed in that lake for some reason it can give swimmers a bit of an allergic reaction. 32:30 pier to pier, not too bad for a first effort Anyone doing the triathlon this weekend? Water levels are good |

That’s my favourite Standard event. What a great weekend every time. Unfortunately we're not coming down this year.

Sorry about that Angus. You must shout out next time you're in the vicinity Just to clarify, that was my first time in Ripon Lake this year. I've been swimming there for years, but the last 12-months have been a bit problematic due to medical issues |

I'm off to Heron Lake tonight. Can't wait. No wetsuit necessary.

Hi all Quick question, if i may: Recently I’ve noticed that a few hours after I do an OW swim I develop hay fever- or cold-like symptoms: constant sneezing, runny nose and sweating. This is particularly bad following an evening swim, when I will invariably wake up about 2am needing to take cold remedies. The symptoms usually recede after 24 hours but can be quite debilitating. It's driving me mad and my wife isn't too happy at being woken up in the middle of the night either! I know that colds and flu are caused by a virus, and that you can’t catch a cold by going outside with wet hair or by getting caught in the rain. So what causes my symptoms? (FYI the lakes I swim in are ‘official’ OW lakes so I know they’re kept to high safety standards) I did read somewhere that one possible explanation may be that swimming in cold water has ‘woken up’ a latent cold bug, but given that this happens pretty much weekly I can’t see that being the case. Does this happen to anyone else? Anyone got any thoughts? Thanks PS it also happens if i get caught in the rain on a long bike ride, and occassionaly after a pool swim too. |
