Dio - nobody says it is an overnight process but the reality is most people could if they committed and trained properly. Trained properly is the big thing.

Sorry, I've been working.

Bob, in response to your question earlier, weight was the big factor. My first 3:30 came off the back of a comparatively low level of running, but I was a triathlete that year so I was getting CV work over and above the running. I only got near that again when I got the number of runs per week close to the number of workouts per week I was doing as a triathlete.

Gobi, intervals around 5k or 10k pace depending on what I'm doing. Other stuff 7:45 to 8.30. Long runs definitely faster than you'd prescribe. I'm training with a group of athletes who all have about my 5k time, but some have up to 20 minutes on me in the marathon, and who are all training for a spring marathon.

Gobi - Agreed, commitment and quality of training is vital, but I'm still not sure that the 'most people' bit is correct.

Mr Average + Above Average training doesn't necessarily = the same absolute level of success (i.e. 3 hours)

One day, when I have fewer demands on my time (I know, busy people find time, lazy ones don't), I will test out the theory. As it is, even at my meagre mileage and when I do most of my running at lunchtime from work, my wife thinks that all I think about is running. God knows how she'd react to 80-100 miles a month!

do you mean 80-100 a week ?

I think I could get any 20-30 something close within a few years if they did what I said

LOL, I try to make money from this coaching lark sometimes and here I am giving away all my secrets :¬)

Dio - I'm in my 40s and if my ankle would let me do 30 miles a week I would run sub 3 by October. :¬)

I'm in my 40s and am steadily improving...well, in the running stakes, not so sure about anything else ;)
