Roobarb from on here has done some tremendous work to highlight this as an issue, but when I was working I'd ask women about their experience of endometrial biopsy and for many it was no problem and a general anaesthetic would have been unnecessary. And you can't generally tell who's going to find it extremely painful and who's going to be OK beforehand.

O had one recently - just to be on the safe side before we potentially adjust my oestrogen dose. I got away with an external only scan too - I didn’t fancy an internal as I was bleeding at the time, and the radiologist said she’d got a decent image of the uterus, which is all that was needed.
