Nice metres Andy ! the first of many millions ! February was a real doozey of a month !
Muttley . Thanks for the time out mode change, that does damn well annoy me. Especially as my machine is in an unlit room and I do rely on the monitor to be able to see what's going on.
Good going on the rowing too.. I've had to miss the last three days due to time constraints ! Hopefully get back into the swing tomorrow.
Thanks team! I have memories of a bike saddle soreness after a 70 mile ride, years ago - done as a complete non-cyclist around the Lake District See, I have past form for this kind of long distance thing.
Stuck with the 10k+ every day for March today. We're having a short break in April, so I'll not be able to do the easy C2 challenge then.
Did this today, which was hard work with 1/2/3 power strokes every 30 seconds, all with a 2k+18 pace, but limited time r20, which is what made it a good workout.

I'm so glad it wasn't a four hour row, with one power stroke every 10 minutes, which would have more like golf. It was a bit of fun.
ION, shiny "M" pin and t-shirt now in the post from C2 😀
I happened across one of Dark Horse's (I think) videos t'other day, about not raising your heels for the drive. He does a drill where you tie a stretchy band across the monorail to stop yourself from sliding too far forward. I didn't do that but I did row 5,000m at 18-20 spm trying to focus on driving with feet more planted than usual. Which means not moving so far forward and made it feel an oddly short stroke. However, pace was the same if not better at this spm at hr was slightly better. Can't tell from one session of course but maybe worth remembering in future.
My problem is that when I focus on one aspect, the others go to ratshit. Spm is good, hr and pace drift ... hr is good, spm and pace drift ... and so on. And now there's one more thing to fret about
That's such good advice Muttley! I've been trying to avoid that heel lift for a fortnight now, and it's definitely helped. I guess I was trying to maximise the stroke length, which came at too high a cost in terms of power efficiency.
Speaking of trying too hard, I decided that my 30 minute PB from January needed attacking. Hey, why not, on a busy Monday evening? Then I decided it should wait until tomorrow, so extended the warmup to 2500m to finish a Rowalong video, then decided to at least start it and see how it went. 30 minutes of top tier effort...
That was tough. All that effort for an extra 72 metres. Chuffed to get my first "90th centile" row fir MV50s in the C2 rankings. Went through 5k with a 7s PB too - was not expecting that!
Some years ago I forwent straps and dropped down to 16 to 20 spm AND changed footwear to a very flat based set of shoes. After 6 months I really reaped the benefits of the extra power coming from a firmer planted foot. Certainly far more effective than coming up on the forefoot.
Indeed nice, esp that middle section holding the pace on 23 spm.
For me 6 x 2 mins on and off, working on the better planted stroke. Pace varied a little as a consequence. Seems I get best result with the torso upright rather than canted forward (and arms out straight), that seems to get the feet in position when I dig in for the drive. Higher spm too. Overall pace for the session about 0.1 sec slower than I would expect.
Yeah, but that guy in first is doing some crazy 10k+ per day thing throughout March. Totally bonkers.
Speaking of which, I did an interesting hour row last night, with 4 sets of 3 x 15-minutes, which was 3 x 5-minute splits of r18@2k+20, r20@2k+18, r24@12. The r18 splits were the toughest, in terms of keeping bang on the splits. It was meant to be 75 minutes, but I had to stop for dinner with the family, so it was "just" the 60 minutes instead.
