That one's so convoluted I think I'd have trouble following it even I had it printed out in large fonts and stuck to the erg in front of me. Anyhoo, declaring 2 x 20 minutes UT1, tis a bit warm in the lounge even with the patio doors wide open so I did perspire somewhat. Good sesh though, managed to get and keep the hr right in the zone. That dog days thingy looks interesting. I'd have to slot in an extra sesh for the final week. Which is good because I have the next million-metre milestone in view. |

I had an interesting time doing what I'd planned as a UT1 session this morning but the post I started got a bit long so became a blog if anyone is interested. fetcheveryone.com/blog/27282 I'd be curious to read your thoughts. |

Interesting blog Nellers, thanks for sharing! When you say 2-3 seconds either way of 1:57 was you expecting to increase the pace with each rate increase? eg 2:00, 1:57, 1:55? The plan I follow usually has r18 at 2k +19s, then as a general rule of thumb each increase of 2 stroke rates will be 2-3 seconds faster in pace (not set in stone but the early stages of the plan tend to be 2s quicker per rate increase), which based on your pb of 1:45 pace would give you targets of 2:02, 1:59, 1:57. I think these would be doable if you are in pb shape, but I think it's important to set targets based on current fitness rather than pb (apologies for not knowing your current fitness, I've been absent from here for far too long), so if you're in say 1:48 shape for 2k maybe starting the r20 at 2:05 would be better? Another factor may be the temperature in the shed at the moment, are you able to erg in the garden? One of our members did just that, he's done multiple 5ks during July with a best 17:42, but he had a feeling the poor circulation/temp in the spare bedroom was holding him back, he moved outdoors and instantly pulled a 17:18! I'm on day 1 of the plan I followed last Autumn in the build up to BRIC (I jumped in on week 5 last year but started from the beginning this year). 3 x 4k @r18, 18, 24, targets 2k +19s for r18 and +13s for r24. I'm way off the paces I was pulling last year but I've made a start 👍 |

I'm definitely NOT in PB shape right now Craggy, and I think one of the issues is that my stroke isn't as efficient as it could be, probably because I've used rate increases to accelerate rather than pulling harder. Everything quick has always been free rate so learning to control that and build the pace at a rate is going to help me in the long term. It is hot in the shed but I've got a couple of fans going and honestly yesterday it would have been hotter in the direct sunlight in the garden! |

Maybe revise targets to current fitness for your next session and see how you get on? Yes I have trouble finding shade if I'm not out early enough, I started today's session in the shade but by the last rep I was in direct sunlight, and left a nice puddle on the floor 🌞 |

PS I wouldn't worry about HR during this hot weather it's going to be a fair bit higher than usual due to the heat.

Yeah, I'm just going to do the rate and the "hard pressure" when it's called for and stick with that for now until I've done a few weeks then see how it goes. Paces will sort themselves out I hope, over time.

What I find heartening about that kind of performance is that it's done on the same machine that I have, i.e., it's so well engineered and made it can take the punishment and more besides. Which means that my own machine should be good for years to come!
