Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Good going Nellers. Sounds like the knee is behaving itself. May it continue to do so.

I sometimes get the mojo problem, CW. Usually solved by a bit of a break and a change to the routine, eg, a new training plan or different stuff in the headphones.

Declaring 7,500 metres at a decent UT1 pace. As often happens, a mild case of CBA turned into a satisfying sweaty workout.

I was out for a run this morning and at 140 bpm (roughly 85% of max hr or 80% of hrr) I was cruising along quite happily. The same bpm on the rower has me working hard and puffing. Is it just me?

Definitely not just you. Exactly the same here, everything else falls apart/hurts before I can get my HR up that high.

First row in 3 weeks today - it felt like I'd forgotten everything I'd learned. Just 2 x 10 minutes with stroke rate changes.

It's because we're seated. Running, even before you start moving, you're standing up and your heart is having to pump blood up and down about 6 feet of height. That takes a bit more pressure so a bit more work.

When we're sitting on the rower it's got to overcome gravity over, I guess, less than half that height.

So the effort that we put in on the rower is going to generate a slightly lower HR for the same perceived effort level.

At least that's how it was explained to me.

(And personally right now, being untrained for running, I'm actually marginally the other way round.)

That makes sense. Max hr is max hr so I calculate my erging bands from the same number as my running bands. I suppose UT2 at about 120-125 bpm would the erg equivalent of today's 6-mile plod.

Anyhoo ... PM3 set to 10,000 metres, brain in neutral, headphones on, press play for Pink Floyd ... "ticking away, the moments that make up a dull day ..." Bliss!

Nice one Muttley.

I think I mentioned a while back that I've been doing some reading and I've discovered that a little knowledge is a dangerous thing! I'm spending far more time than is healthy trying to put together a plan to work through to BRIC, which I hope will be able to go ahead at the start of December.

I might blog a bit about it all when I get to the bottom of things. Not sure quite how different things will look compared to what I've been doing but certainly a lot more emphasis on rate and pace rather than pace and heartrate looks likely.

C2's workout for the day today is as follows. Just one question: do they expect me to remember all this?!

4 x 12 min with level change

Pre-set the monitor for a work time of 12:00 and a rest time of 4:00. Let your stroke rate vary as follows per interval: First interval: 5 minutes @20, 1 minute @24, 5 minutes @22, 1 minute @26 Second interval: 4 minutes @20, 2 minutes @24, 4 minutes @22, 2 minutes @26 Third interval: 3 minutes @20, 3 minutes @24, 3 minutes @22, 3 minutes @26 Fourth interval: 2 minutes @20, 4 minutes @24, 2 minutes @22, 4 minutes @26. During the rest time continue rowing at light pressure.

That sort of session is why I have a whiteboard on the wall in the shed!

I have been known to scribble the workout on to a piece of paper and have it on the erg in front of me.

Toying with the dog days challenge. I think I tried this last year but fell down on the final week. It wouldn't be much of a challenge to most of you here (10k in the first week, 20k in the second, 30k in the third and 40k in the fourth) but it might motivate me to get moving again.
