Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,

Shame you weren't race ready but the best call if you weren't feeling it. I 'tuned in' for a little while and watched the ladies 30-39 500m. The winner was amazing and she'd only been rowing for a month!

Struggling to fit everything in that I want to do at the moment (and I'm still not back to full work) so not much rowing for me. Will just need to plan better 😃

I've been looking at that Rathburn Training Guide in a bit more detail and seeing what a plan built to their guidelines might look like.

rathburn.net

I'll be honest, to me it looks pretty top-heavy. There seems to be a heavy emphasis on anaerobic threshold work (which makes sense) but relatively little aerobic base building.

Has anyone else tried using Rathburn-based plans and have any thoughts?

Thanks for the link to the Rathburn guide, Nellers. I’ve not tried using it, but it looks more like the kind of plan you’d follow for a whole year during on and off seasons rather than picking up in the build-up for an event. In that way it mirrors the kind of periodisation of training I did for sprinting - longer sessions with shorter recovery in the winter to build the aerobic base with a much heavier emphasis on the threshold/anaerobic stuff building up to and during racing season. So I can follow the logic that way.

I’m going to take a closer look at that as there’s a lot of useful stuff in there about HR, training zones and stroke rates, and also the technique section. Not sure I’d dip into the plans too much though, because the idea of everything building up to one big event doesn’t seem to mesh too well with normal life (well, not for me, anyway). I think I prefer the Pete Plan approach with shorter cycles of training that prepare you better for several TT attempts over a shorter period of time.

I've been doing a bit of reading and viewing from a YouTube coach called Travis Gardner, CW.

His view, especially, is that rowing has an over-emphasis on regular testing which leads to very short-term planning in terms of development. You're only ever shooting for the month end test rather than building long term, so you never build a big enough base to support really top end performance.

Whilst I agree with him for top end performers I also think that for us lot playing at it there's a big risk with putting all our eggs in one basket, no matter how shiny the basket might be.

Definitely some interesting stuff around the prescribed stroke rates for paces which I've not been doing with my mainly-nellerised-Wolverine plan so far though, and I'm trying to think a bit more about how I use some of this stuff to get better at rowing rather than just able to row faster.

Cheers Nellers, but there's nothing wrong with me, just lost the erging vim for a bit. I need to spend some time and draw up a training plan to suit myself. Been looking at that Rathburn document, which I already had but it's worth a revisit. 30 minutes steady done this morning, just for the metres.

A lot going on at Nellers Towers this last week or so with redecorating and tradesmen and such so I have to say it's hit my training quite a bit. I'm still managing something every day but it's not often been rowing.

I did a steady 10k this morning and that's my first metres since Sunday. There's an outside chance of some more tomorrow and I expect to do a session on Sunday but it's patchy and inconsistent. Just ticking over really.

It's been quiet on here this week! Hope the work on your house has gone smoothly, Nellers, and hope you get your mojo back soon, Muttley.

I've not managed to do much this week either - it's been a heavy week at work and all the rain has ruled out backyard rowing for a few days. I might manage a short session later if I see a patch of blue in the sky, though.

Nellers, that's an interesting view from Travis Gardner. Like you say, there's logic in that approach for top athletes aiming for international competitions with very big carrots at the end of it.

I know that I need something to train for and that whatever it is needs to be attainable. Realistically, that's SBs and PBs and maybe ranking positions rather than race positions. So shorter term plans that theoretically keep you closer to being "race" sharp are probably a better bet.

But thinking about the importance of base training has also made me think about the running I've been doing recently. I started joining my club's Zoom intervals sessions back in April as a kind of run/walk alternative to the C25K programme. Although my intervals pace has dropped by up to 2 mins per mile since then, I still can't run for much further than a mile without losing the will to live, so unless I'm going to return to track racing, I need to bite the bullet and do some proper base training.
