Back in the gym today after a 3 day break and feel like the naughty kid who didn't do her homework! Did Spin this morning so no time to row - school girl error - what was I thinking! The spin "class" was pap - would have worked much harder rowing

Are you all familiar with the concept of "mission creep"? That thing where you start off with limited aims and things just snowball? Like starting a marathon on 4 hour pace and deciding 3 miles in to go for sub-3 because you feel really good? That.

So I started this rowing gig just to keep fit while I'm injured BUT today I'm wondering what the standard is like in the age groups at the British Indoor Rowing champs. All the stuff I can find online talks about how it's very inclusive and anyone can have a go. It's not that far from me (about 30 minutes on the train) but I can't find any full results to see whether I'd be in danger of being dead last.

I quite fancy having a go but I'm not going to pay an entry if I'm going to be finishing dead last or close to it. I know I'm on the edge of the top 25% of the C2 GB rankings for my age group for "heavyweights" on the Concept2 logbook website but if only the top 50 turn up I'm going to be way off it on the day.

Anyone have any knowledge of what the standard is like? Or a link to the full results for last year?

And if it looks like a proper open and inclusive event does anyone else fancy a bash?

Men's open results here Nellers

row2k.com

But it's not very user friendly - I gave up on the 7th page of 254 where the 2k time was around 6:30. Suggests you would be fine.

Talk to Tiger Feet - she's done the juniors several times

I'm sure Lalli of this parish took part when she rowed during a time of injury.

Cheers both. Looks like it might be a trip to the velodrome in December then.

I'm 110% sure I'm not going to be participating but I quite fancy volunteering.

I've done BIRC once before (and a few regional events at various distances, which are a bit smaller and cosier). If you're not in the seeded front row, your effort is fairly anonymous. I think I just about managed a top-10 finish in my lightweight class.

I did BIRC when the fab four were still rowing (I think it was 1998) and queued up in registration behind (Sir) Steve Redgrave. I just about came up to his shoulder. In real life these heavyweights are like buildings with feet, and lungs from a racehorse! They all race the Open classes though, so the hoi polloi don't have to race them in the age groups.

I volunteered there a few years ago. Ended up helping out with the weigh-in for the lightweights so didn’t see a great deal of the actual rowing. A lot of the GB squad were there. If I remember right Mo Sbihi pulled well under 6 mins for 2k :-O

Hardest part was getting to the velodrome early on Sunday morning. Had a car in those days so was able to drive because trains just didn’t start early enough. “Lost” my car in the Westfield car park afterwards (was looking on the wrong level lol)

Keep an eye on the website, you can register as a volunteer there.

I'll need to get a pass out from The Boss but I'm pretty much decided that I'll be giving that a go then.

Do I need to be a British Rowing memberb or a rowing club member or is it open to anyone old Tom, Dick or Nellers?
