We use the spare room:
An Adidas bench - adjustable and perfectly adequate.
A selection of good quality dumbbells stored on a rack - 3kgs, 4kgs, 6kgs, 8kgs and 10kgs. We already had an adjustabl and various other dbs (seem to have several 5kgs!

I’ve spin bike in same room as office as I thought I’d be too cold in the garage.

Weight plates, bar, resistance bands and step in house as use Les Mills app and link it to TV.

Treadmill & cross trainer in garage.

All of which aren’t used enough no matter where they are located! :)

I'd love an Olympic bar and more plates but they're expensive and unless you have a some sort of squat rack as well you might as well stick with DBs. Can always up the difficulty level by bench pressing lying back on a Swiss Ball. Quite a LOT harder.

Do you use a training app or follow a programme? What exercises do you usually do/plan to do?

My kit is all buried at the moment, but the only thing I felt was really worth investing in beyond basic weights was a bench - the cheapest possible decathlon one, as all the almost a bench but not quite objects we have seem to be lethally unstable for certain things (step ups are the worst, but it's no fun to unexpectedly topple when doing tricep dips either). I also have a selection of resistance bands, a turbo trainer, and a punch bag 😂

Some good strong wall mounts you can attach be resistance bands to might also come in handy, I've found being able to use the beams in the attic room worked well for me but now the gym stuff has moved to the spare room I'm not sure what I'll be able to use instead.

I've got a few resistance bands - full size and mini - and some dumbbells and weight plates. I'll get a bench when we move house and I'll have a pull up bar in the garden. I like the TRX training set up. Meanwhile, I use stairs for push ups and step ups.

Ness
lammo is correct. Here's the Ness home gym. Photo taken a few years ago...

Some of the equipment was moved out of shot because Mr Ness was videoing and photographed me as I did my deadlifting...

We've gathered quite a bit more equipment since then! 😉😂 Most of it used by Mr Ness....

Thanks, both. Although we have spent a fair amount in total, we've gradually bought bits of it over time. I still think it's probably less than joint gym fees would have cost Mr Ness and I. We generally weight training 3 or 4 times a week.

About This Thread

Maintained by
What equipment would you say is essential for a home gym set-up?

We’re toying with the idea of putting some equipment in either the garage or the spare room, neither me or Mrs Sloth are interested in joining a local gym, mainly as it’s miles away!

I run and cycle, I won’t be using a treadmill as I run outdoors. I’ve already got a turbo trainer so can either use that or get a Wattbike so we can both use it.

What other stuff would people recommend?
