What equipment would you say is essential for a home gym set-up?
We’re toying with the idea of putting some equipment in either the garage or the spare room, neither me or Mrs Sloth are interested in joining a local gym, mainly as it’s miles away!
I run and cycle, I won’t be using a treadmill as I run outdoors. I’ve already got a turbo trainer so can either use that or get a Wattbike so we can both use it.
What other stuff would people recommend?

I have a yoga mat (stretching) and Reebok step deck (acts as a bench as well as a step) adjustable dumb bells and bar bell and some resistance bands

We’ve already got yoga mats, resistance bands and some adjustable dumbells in there so we’re off to a flying start!
The step to double up as a bench sounds like a good idea though.

What Pixie said.
Depends how much you’ll be using it. A cheap barbell/dumbbell set from argos will get you started in terms of weights but the sky is the limit.
Also depends how much space you have and what you’re trying to achieve. A standard Olympic barbell is 7ft so consider how big your spare room is before splashing out.

that was my lockdown purchase!! It has slots for resistance bands so you can use them too thing with home gyms is you can buy loads! why not start using what you have then see what you really can't do without once you are in the routine (something I am VERY bad at!)

Hmmm. Space is limited so it might end up going in the garage but to be fair, it’s limited space in there as well to some extent.

That’s a very good point about using what’s there at the moment.
I’m just in the process of decorating the room so it got me thinking about new kit.

if you are in the garage then some kind of shelving would help with space and be easy to install and no need to think about the room still being a spare room BUT when my stuff was in the garage I used it even less than I do now it's in the spare room!

That’s part of the reason we’re looking at moving stuff inside.
I hardly used the turbo trainer this past couple of years as the garage is always cold and damp. This is why I’m looking at a Wattbike as I’ve read that they’re relatively quiet so would work well in the house.
It may be the case of sticking with the basics as you’ve already mentioned and getting in to a routine from there.

I use my turbo in the garage and find that once I am going the temperature is hardly an issue I've done the Zwift alps when it's snowing outside and deserts in a heat wave plus the loo is further away so you get a break as you dash inside!
