Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

It depends what you want from the gym really. I set up my garage early this year and mine has to accommodate both mine, my better half and our 4 year olds needs. I have the turbo, a wooden plyo box, 2 adjustable dumbbells from 2kg to 36kg, a power rack (mirafit do a short version that fits in a garage), a cable machine attached to the rack, a bench, 2 barbells and about 240kg in bumper plates. We also have a few bits like resistance bands, rollers etc. There are also a couple of bits for out back like drop pads and a pull up bar that doubles as a rack for overhead lifts.

The main thing is making sure you'll use what you get, it will do what you require of it and that you have the space to use it. Storage space and entertainment are always good.

Also, I found just sticking up some polystyrene board in-between the rafters and ensuring that the door is wind proof with water being directed away has helped to keep the temperature to be much more stable in there but the big fan used for the turbo also helps to circulate the air.

I use my turbo in the garage and find that once I am going the temperature is hardly an issue

I rode a 100km Zwift race last winter or the one before in the garage, my feet were so cold afterwards that I couldn’t feel my toes for about three hours!
My hands end up the same. I’ve probably got Raynaud’s or something like that which makes it challenging.

Nellers might be along at some point to share his shed setup, which would be interesting

I'm lucky in that I have a spare bedroom that I've converted to a gym. Hardwood flooring on all of it and rubber tiles on half of that, TV mounted on the wall. In there I have a rowing machine, various dumbbells and kettlebells and a swiss ball

Nothing’s essential, it depends what you want. My wife spends more of her indoor training time on a bike (zwift) and we have a treadmill that does a bit of mostly winter mileage. A frame with bars for pull up and dips and an adjustable step for jumping up and down. A small cheap set of weights that is less used. Oh in fact most of the latter came free with the treadmill, that’s the only reason we have it!

Currently we have a number of dumbells with plates, and a smaller barbell, a bench for pressing a couple of kettle bells.

It's in my sons bedroom currently

We have a small, electric fan heater to take the chill off, only takes about 10 mins and our garage is extended with windows and french doors. Should be more than enough to keep your fingers and toes at a more friendly temperature.

Run and cycle outside.
On the upstairs landing.

I have 2 resistance bands. A Broom stick. 2 dumbells weighing 10kg, 2 kettle bells 7.5kg. You don't need a lot else as a runner. Some stairs.

I would like a chin up bar but it's banned and my DIY skills are such it might bring the house down.

About This Thread

Maintained by
What equipment would you say is essential for a home gym set-up?

We’re toying with the idea of putting some equipment in either the garage or the spare room, neither me or Mrs Sloth are interested in joining a local gym, mainly as it’s miles away!

I run and cycle, I won’t be using a treadmill as I run outdoors. I’ve already got a turbo trainer so can either use that or get a Wattbike so we can both use it.

What other stuff would people recommend?
