um
To be fair though Muttley, an annual cost of £1 to £2 for the vacuum means I can probably restrict myself and keep the £1 annual cost by reducing the time used ;-)

(by running with it, obviously, not doing less)

thanks for that - and it's reminded me that I should defrost my freezer (so need to plan meals to empty it first)

Hmm: the light bulb cost looks to be for an old incandescent bulb that you can't buy anymore rather than a modern led filament bulb that is about a tenth of that cost

Justified in rarely getting the hoover out!
Will make sure the boyssee the Xbox cost and tv costand bill them accordingly

BUT their rooms barely need any additional heat in the winter as their electronics generate heat- Similarly, we now have a cold kitchen as it no longer has halogen spotlights warming it up on dark mornings

Yeah, those look like straight averages for quite a few appliances.

Swapping out all incandescant light bulbs (does anyone still actually use them any more?!) for LEDs will save you £40/year straight away. The payback time even at the higher capital costs 7 years ago (£5-6 per bulb) was less than 2 years.

Before the cap jumped to 3.5x what it was....

I did a back of the envelope calculation about 7-8years ago and if everyone at that time who was still using incandescant light bulbs (including the RW hacks now screaming "it's all net zero's fault" and at the time said replacing with LEDs was the end of the world) swtched to LEDs instead, the saving on the UK grid was on the order of the same output that is predicted for Hinckley C when fully online (3.8GW).

Negawatts are cool.

And undersold as a solution to many issues.

Why are we paying VAT?

Surely fuel is essential!

Think it was imposed by the EU in 1993, Pix, but could be wrong about that.

um - thanks for that list, very interesting. I've just been and switched off my heated towel rail, although I don't think mine uses as much as the price listed, as it's very small.

When I replaced my fridge freezer I noticed a sizeable drop in my usage, old fridge freezer used to chug along like a tractor. Ditto new washing machine uses a lot less energy than the old one.

Yes. I agree those are reasonable consumption figures for those appliances. Rule of thumb, if it is designed to make something hotter or colder it will be a big consumer of electricity. A big old fridge freezer, especially side by side US style, is generally a big consumer, and turning off spare beer fridges and over flow freezers is a good idea.

Everything else is trimming round the edges and a matter of turning off when you don't need it or finding a way if doing the same job more efficiently. Pressure cookers are top for energy saving on the hob, but they terrify me.

My top tip is to run the dishwasher overnight so it opens and gives off heat in the kitchen in the morning when you need it.

If you have to use a tumble dryer in the winter make sure the laundry is as dry as possible before it goes in. An extra spin in the washing machine will extract a bit more water and reduce the overall cost of the drying. It won't cost much on its own.
