If you look on the training overview page, and scroll down to the bottom, there's a little section labelled 'Suggested Training'. It's a set of very old pages that were based on some rudimentary analysis that I did ages ago. Best estimate, I'd say closing in on ten years ago. Apart from anything else, I have ten years more data to play with, and a few more notches on my keyboard
And the existing pages are pretty dead - they get about 100 views a month, and I'd guess that many of those views are "wtf is this?".
Here's what the crappy old '5k in 21 minutes' page looks like (it's still live at the moment, I'm just waiting for the server to process all the new data before I put the new stuff live).
Firstly, the layout is pretty awful. In case you can't see, the dark box on the left shows upcoming attempts at 21 minute 5k. All fine, but hardly thrilling. Then you get a cramped up table showing 16 weeks of your training, number of days per week, distance, time spent, longest run, and pace. And the figures in brackets show you typical figures for all of the above, based on my analysis. You've really got to *love* looking at data to want to spend time working out what all of that tells you.
Just below that, a table showing your fastest times at the given distance. Ok fine.
Then the red box appears to be giving you the exact same data that was in the training table.
Just below that, a bunch of small flat graphs that add very little to the piece.
They've been annoying me for a couple of years, so I've finally had time this month to pull them apart and rebuild it all from scratch. To reiterate, this new page isn't live yet, but I am excited by it, so I've pulled out some screenshots. Here's a page that shows marathon training for 4hr marathoners:
Let's run through it from the top:
The red header
Straightforward options to pick your race distance, goal time, and to enter the date of your event. In the screenshot, I've used 21st October 2018, which was the date I did Abingdon Marathon. You can put any date in that box - so if you've got an event coming up, or something you'd like to look back on, you're sorted. That's already better, isn't it?
Typical Summary Figures
I wanted the page to start off nice and simple with some headline stats. In the example, it says that for your 4hr marathon, you should expect to run about 480 miles, train on 58/112 days (112 = 16 weeks), spend 73h20 running in that time, and have an average pace of 9:10/mile. The final column shows you the number of matching performances that went into generating these figures. As headlines go, this hopefully gives you a quick idea of whether you are in the right place or not.
Training Distance By Week
I've taken the table from the crap version and turned it into a lovely column graph. The grey bars show you the typical figures for each week leading up to the event. And the red bars show you how you fared / are faring. The summary just above the graph tells you the number of weeks where you 'beat' the average, and the overall percentage of the suggested distance that you achieved. Like it?
Training Distance By Pace
This is a brand new addition that (I think) really lifts this page. Again, the grey bars show the average figures, and the red bars show what I did. It feels pretty clear to me that I missed much of the quicker paced runs during my training. Here's a more extreme example - I switched to a 3hr marathon, and looked at the pace graph:
you can see that my red bars are nowhere near where they'd need to be.
Typical 16 Longest Runs
I had initially hoped to provide a graph that gave guidance on a weekly order for long runs. But the data made this difficult. Imagine that half of the runners in my data did their longest run five weeks out from a marathon; and had an easier run the following week. And the other half of the runners did this the other way round. This meant that the average long run for both weeks was less than it should have been.
My alternative approach is to list the long runs, so you can think of this graph as a sort of tick chart. In the big screenshot up there^^^ it suggests I did reasonably well with my long runs for my Abingdon attempt, but if I had ambitions of a sub-3, the graph shows me I am not in the right place:
Your Fastest At This Distance
Not much to say about these - I left these as was.
Fetchies with similar aims
Just a bit of spit and polish here too.

More Data
The extra data I've accrued over the last 10 years means there are now more permutations.
5k goes from 18mins through to 40mins in one minute increments
5mi goes from 30-50 in one minute increments
10k goes from 34-65 in one minute increments
10mi goes from 55-100 in five minute increments
Half goes from 70-150 in five minute increments
Mara goes from 2hr30 - 5hr15 in fifteen minute increments
As always, the boundaries are not set by any notion of "minimum standard", but purely based on the amount of valid data that I have to work with.
A bit about methodology
There was quite a bit of data cleaning before working out the final figures.
For example, the 43 minute 10k group comes from runners who have achieved anything from 42:01 through to 43:00 in a race. They must have raced this distance at least five times previously (10 times for 5k, because of parkrun). And this must be the *first time* they've achieved the sub-43. My view was that five attempts is enough to knock off the early rough edges.
The runner must also have logged training at least three times a week, and on at least 15 out of the 16 weeks prior to the event. To allow for detailed pace analysis, they must also have used a GPS.
From this data set, I've largely worked with median values, because averages were skewed upwards by the occasional outlier who logged extreme mileage.
When can I play?
The server is running through the data one last time to build the final set of data that is used in the pages. It will probably take another couple of hours to do that - so it might be tomorrow before you get to try it out.
So what do I do now?
I dunno. Have a biscuit? And tell me whether you reckon this will be a useful improvement.

And another short blog. It looks like the Garmin server that sends us files whenever someone trains is having a bit of a turn. Runs logged since about 7.40pm are still in the queue. I'm receiving the notifications that new training has happened, but when I send our requests for the data to the Garmin server, the responses are broken.
I'm sure they'll resolve it soon. Updates from me in the comments

Just a really quick blog. This morning, I had a donation from an overseas Fetchie, but there was no reference number on it. I have tried searching emails and nicknames, and can't find any exact matches - so if you donated, and your ads have not switched off, get in touch and I'll sort it out.
If you don't donate, please consider it. Thank you

There was an article in The Guardian last week about the potential for mandatory insurance and registration plates for bikes, with quotes from the esteemed Grant Shapps (aka Michael Green):
theguardian.com
The stats I found online say that over 1500 people were killed by motor vehicles last year. Compare that with 3 (three) people killed by bicycles. If you've had a bad experience with a cyclist, you might understandably want more accountability - but it feels that there are other more pertinent opportunities to improve safety on our roads. And the benefits of cycling for health and the environment should be a priority, rather than putting up barriers that make it harder for people to cycle.
One point really stuck out. Mr Shapps is quoted as saying:
"Somewhere where cyclists are actually not breaking the law is when they speed, and that cannot be right, so I absolutely propose extending speed limit restrictions to cyclists, ...Particularly where you’ve got 20mph limits on increasing numbers of roads, cyclists can easily exceed those, so I want to make speed limits apply to cyclists."
I got up to 35mph once.
I was on the A6, going down a hill that dropped about 45 metres in the space of half a mile. The Shappster was right - it was very easy. I didn't have to pedal at all. But it was the scariest easy thing I've ever done, especially with dozens of huge blocks of metal blazing past about a metre away at twice my speed. But it was fine, because the speed limit was 60mph.
If you've done some bike riding, you've probably had a similar experience.
But what about this idea that it's easy to exceed 20mph? If so, you'd imagine that everyone would be doing it.
Luckily I have (a) a large database of GPS data from cyclists; (b) an unwillingness to accept information presented to me as fact by politicians without doing my own research; and (c) a point to prove.
I looked at all the GPS data uploaded by cyclists during the month of July. It's a good month for cyclists - usually the biggest month of the year in terms of overall distance logged. There's plenty of daylight, which makes it easier to go out before most of the big vehicles get on the road.
I excluded as much turbo, Zwift, wattbike, rollers, spinning, ellipticals, and other virtual cycling from my data. And it was also a great opportunity to filter out some driving logged as cycling, including at least a couple of drivers who were most definitely speeding. But hey, I don't sell data. Just stop going too fast please.
I was left with just under a quarter of a million kilometres of riding by 1500 riders. Yes, I know I've just switched between imperial and metric, but I'm just trying to make it harder for Mr Shapps to understand.
The average speed of all cyclists in my group was just under 12 miles an hour.
But all good cyclists (and I'd say the large majority of those I've seen whilst out on the roads, especially those who look dressed for the part) stop at traffic lights and crossings. Which means the average doesn't tell the full story. So what's underneath that average?
I split those quarter of a million kilometres into 100 metre chunks, and worked out the average speed of each chunk. Don't worry, I used a computer. Then I totalled up the number of chunks for each speed, and came up with the following graph:
You can see why the average is about 12mph, and you can see how much variation there is too.
A whopping 98.6% of all cycling is done at less than 20mph; and 99.9% is at less than 25mph. Only about 6,000 of the 248,462 kilometres we cycled were done at greater than the 20mph mark; and only 196 of the 1498 cyclists breached the 20mph at ANY point.
My own experience tells me that those >20mph points are on lovely smooth wide roads, probably with a bit of a helpful gradient. Everywhere with a 20mph limit around here has cars down both sides of the road, pedestrians everywhere, and more potholes than road.
It is not easy. Mr Shapps, I call bullshit. You may as well suggest that the law of gravity should be applied to all road users. Whilst you're at it, could you also absolutely propose making it illegal to lick your own elbow? Or making it a fundamental requirement for government ministers to be able to tell their own arse from one?

Really interesting. I also pondered on how the 20mph limit has been set largely due to the reduction in injuries that result, so it does not follow that any limit for bicycles should be 20mph anyway. Schapps is a Conservative reactionary. There is nothing else to expect. Also the conservatives and actually their Liberal allies and Labour SNP opposition. They are very good at making laws up yet not supplying the finance and support to enforce them, even if they were good laws. See Tony's law, banging people up for longer will not and does not prevent people smashing children to pieces, proper support in the community and hospitals will. See Rwanda. See Brexit. See Truss. See Sunaker. See Starmer. See Davey. See Sturgeon.Ocelot Spleens

I have found it interesting that speed has been the big home ins from SHAPPS MUPPETRY.Gobi
He said a whole heap of other shit too
I spent 64 mins at 23 plus mph at the weekend. YEAH I was riding in an event but we do it. You can look at my data and I'm often above 20mph and have to slow down in 30s at points. Peaked this morning around 34.
Fortunately most of the time it in 40 50 or 60mph areas
So is it easy to ride plus 20mph for long periods ? NO
However, it's not that hard for periods of time and many of the 20 and 30mph restrictions are areas I can ride at those speeds.
I may not agree with him on a lot of points but as cyclists we need to stick to the laws of the road.9:59am, 23rd Aug 2022 -
He did indeed say a lot of other shit. Anecdotes about individual abilities are one thing, but the data as a whole illustrates that his proposal for speed limits is largely irrelevant. And yes of course we should abide by the law - the blog doesn't say otherwise.fetcheveryone10:32am, 23rd Aug 2022

I suppose compared to cars bikes have a much greater range of speeds on a defined speed limit road. Riding on a slight inline in a 20mph area a "normal" rider might not be much above 12-14mph. On the same section of road downhill they can pretty easily be at 25mph+, and its definitely "fun" to go fast on a nice long downhill. I'm not a regular cyclist, but I'd see it as something of a challenge to ride at or above the speed limit in some circumstances.larkim

Impressive work Fetch and I agree with many of the comments. However as a keen cyclist I have absolutely no issue with the law being changed so that the existing speed limits that apply to cars also apply to cyclists. Yes, there are not that many cyclists that can and do exceed 20mph, but that does not mean that we should be free to do so in a built-up area where it has been decided that 20mph is the maximum safe speed.Dibble12:45pm, 23rd Aug 2022

Will they make it a legal requirement to have an accurate / calibrated speedometer fitted to all bikes also? Otherwise prosecuting someone for doing 23 in a 20 could get tricky.Sam Jelfs1:00pm, 23rd Aug 2022

Great article. Well done. I would also suspect that cyclists recording their cycle and taking the time to upload it are, on average, keener and more serious cyclists than the average? Great blog, It'll never work though, using actual data to try and influence policy. What really bugged me about Shapp's comments is that cyclists in towns seem to get abuse mainly for holding up the traffic by riding too slowly and not letting cars go past.shanksi10:13am, 26th Aug 2022

Over the last week or so, about 750 of you have chosen your country/county in your settings. If you've not done that yet, you can do it here:
fetcheveryone.com/user-settings-about.php
I also realised that I could automatically update counties based on the lat/lng of the owner, BUT it didn't feel right to do this for everyone, because of data protection etc. However, we also have a seldom-used member map (it's tucked under People, if you want to go find it). That's an opt-in feature, so people have agreed to have their dot displayed on the map. Given this precondition, it seems a much more acceptable leap to turn this into county data for those who opted in.
That gave us about another 500 people with counties / countries - and we're starting to get a bit of momentum now - and enough to start offering some meaningful filters on the data.
May I present the Fastest Fetchies league (Leagues > Racing), filtered to show 10k times just for people from Glamorgan:
fetcheveryone.com/league?distance=10&unit=km&year=&age=&people=&mindate=&page=0&location=77
And look. I am 14th fastest from my county! That seems much more impressive (at least, until you do the sums).
To gather up the smaller / less-well-represented counties, there are also options in Location box to choose England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland. Woo! I am the 21st fastest Fetchie in all of Wales!
At the very bottom of the location box, you can also choose Rest of World, which looks like this:
fetcheveryone.com/league?distance=10&unit=km&year=&age=&people=&mindate=&page=0&location=ROW
it's wonderful to see all the flags
I've also done very similar stuff with the training mileage league. Here you can see that I am the 16th most mile-tastic Fetchie in all of Wales this year:
fetcheveryone.com/league-training.php?month=0&dist_or_time=D&category=R&gender=&age=0&filter=all&year=2022&location=W
If you've got any suggestions for other places where I could utilise the location filters, shout out. You can leave a comment, or you can put in a Feature Request: fetcheveryone.com/featurevoting
Obviously, the more people who pick their county/country, the better this feature will be. So if you see someone with a union jack against their profile (that's the default flag, as we're mostly UK based), give them a nudge to update it

Now that over 500 Fetchies (510) have updated their country and county details, it's time to start putting that data to use. I've sold it all to Elon Musk, and he'll be round to harvest your organs this evening.
Joke. I have never, don't, and will never sell your data. I have enough fun turning it into tables and stats to keep me busy.
Your country flags and counties are pulling through to a few pages already:
Annual Training League
fetcheveryone.com/league-training.php
Fastest Fetchies (PB League)
fetcheveryone.com/league
All Time Mileage League
fetcheveryone.com/training-league-alltime.php
You can't filter by any of this just yet, but that'll be the next step. Hopefully the presence of the information on the tables will encourage more folks to update their details. Oh, and btw, the default is GB, because that's a fair reflection of where most of our users are - but it's nice seeing the other country flags pop up here and there

Well, I'll tell you. I thought "if I google 'list of UK counties', that'll bring back a list that everyone will agree on".
Oh dear me no
If you read the comments section on yesterday's blog, you'll know just how many people I have mortally let down with my casual attitude towards counties.
When I was growing up, thanks to cricket, I thought there were only 17 counties, plus "minor" ones. It turns out that there are literally *any* number of them, depending on your viewpoint. And the one that you're in not only depends on all of that, but also on which other ones are in the list too
There was a suggestion that we should use the same list that England athletics use, but that lumps Wales into Regions, and Scotland into Districts. Individual counties might not produce big enough groups to create meaningful tables, but having given people the opportunity to pick their county, I don't feel I want to take that back.
So far we have 458 Fetchies who have picked out a county for themselves. Of those, 5 have picked Northern Ireland counties, 10 have picked Welsh counties, and 60 have picked Scottish counties. So until there's sufficient depth, we could have national leagues for each of those three. EDIT We also currently have 27 Fetchies who have chosen non-GB, so I reckon that's enough for an 'overseas' league for now.
If you want to tell me that the lists are wrong for your nation, please do me a solid and provide an up-to-date list and I'll see what I can do.

In our addled heat-wave evenings, we've been watching a fair bit of the Commonwealth Games. I find the whole concept of the commonwealth pretty uncomfortable on the whole - anything that celebrates the British Empire makes me want to wince and stare at my toes.
But on the other hand, it's been nice to see the individual elements of the UK having their own moment in the sun; and also to see stars from other countries given a chance to shine, without the overwhelming presence of [all those countries even we thought better than to pick a fight with].
It gave me an idea for another view of umpteen different leaderboards on the site. Whilst we do have quite a few overseas users, there probably aren't enough to pit country against country - but a county-based system could work well, with other countries being treated as counties. So we'd have Devon, Cornwall, Germany, Glamorgan, Canada etc.
I've created a list of counties - which will probably have some omissions or reasons to be offended - but I had to start somewhere. It seems that there are lots of different systems of classifying counties, and that these change more often than I can be bothered to investigate
I'll do a special notification to all users to point them at this, but you can get ahead of the game by going to your user settings and updating your country and county: fetcheveryone.com/user-settings-about.php
Whether you choose the county you live in, or the county of your birth - frankly I don't mind. But it might be a nice way of developing smaller pools of runners, and give you some local people to compete against.
None of the leaderboards exist yet - but let's see what the uptake is first

In my blog yesterday, I explained how I'd received an invitation to join an affiliate scheme for a dildo company. I'll be honest, I wasn't expecting to get fifty comments on the blog - but they did make me laugh
Anyway... a promise is a promise. If you really want to buy anything from them, or failing that, if you just want to find something to laugh about, here's the link. You may need to brush up on your Dutch, and for one final time, this is a link to a company that sellsdildos . You have been warned
awin1.com
I will keep an eye on any commission I earn from the link! FWIW, I don't think I can see what anyone orders (and certainly not who is doing the ordering), so if you're feeling a bit frisky, go for it
Meanwhile, our other affiliate links might be more up your alley:
Sportsshoes.com: awin1.com
Wiggle: awin1.com
Speedo: awin1.com
stick them in your bookmarks for next time you shop.
And whilst I'm at it, Amazon links to *specific* products pay much better than our generic link to their home page - so our list of the top Garmins is worth keeping in mind too:

Anyway... today there's good news for Wahoo and Coros users.
If you have a Wahoo bike computer, or any Wahoo stuff at all, you can now get Fetch to automatically import stuff. Go here for details: fetcheveryone.com/wahoo.php
And after two years of asking, Coros have finally given me the chance to apply to use their API, which (hopefully) means that I should be able to offer automatic import to Coros users too. In other news, I guess I haven't shared anything about my knee injury. We were away on holiday in July, and things were going pretty well (three runs in the first three days, and feeling strong), when we decided to do some stand up paddle boarding.
I'm not the best at balancing, but we had a nice 30-40 minutes on the water. On returning to shore, I pushed my paddle down into the water to see how deep it was. Thinking it'd be fine, I tried to step off my paddle board. My left leg stayed on the board, and my left knee took the brunt of the force. As a result, I've been limping around ever since. My lovely physio reckons I have strained my Medial Collateral Ligament (that's the one on the inner side of the knee).
The good news is that I can still swim, and yesterday I went out for my first bike ride in ages. Just a short one, to see how my knee would cope. Touch wood it seems ok, so I guess I've got a week or so more of biking in my future. And it also seems to have helped a little bit with the range of motion for my knee. Fingers crossed I'll be back running again soon. 11 days and counting. It's amazing how *not* being able to do something makes me really want to

As you might already know, we have a bunch of links to affiliate companies tucked away in the footer of the site. Here's the page:
fetcheveryone.com/shop-affiliates.php
If you follow any of the links, and buy something, Fetch gets a small amount of money from the company. The Amazon link used to be a money-spinner, which could easily earn a couple of hundred quid every December, and a solid chunk of change every other month of the year. But then I think Jeff Bezos got a bit strapped for cash, so they cut all the rates right down, and now I'm lucky if it spits out £50 once every six months.
Anyway... lots of different companies have affiliate schemes, and I've signed up to a third party company called Awin that manages these schemes. Our Proviz, Sportsshoes.com, Wiggle and Speedo links are all such examples.
Every now and then, I get an invitation to join a new scheme. Over the last month, I've had an invitation to promote a company that sends tulip bulbs from Holland; a company that sells nutrition bars; a place that buys your old tech; and a place that sells phones. I've ignored them because they're all a bit niche I reckon.
Then last night, I got an offer from adildo company. I think they sell more than just dildos , but the name of the store includes the word dildo .
Each affiliate invitation usually comes with a spiel about why they are great to work with:
REDACTED is not only the nicest in the bedroom, REDACTED is also the nicest to work with. REDACTED always pays you for every successful transaction within 7 days. Regardless of whether the customer exchanges the product or wants their money back, you have done your work for us and will receive your 20% commission immediately. REDACTED has a product feed available with all its products, so you can set up your store with our products or use our google ads to promote our store.
It made me smile. It's the sort of thing I think the Fetch Community could get behind. Imagine 108,862 orders for massivedildos which you're free to send back if you're not... satisfied
At, let's say, £25 each, that's £5 commission for each one - imagine what we could do with half a million quid
Fifty comments and I'll join their scheme, no questions asked

Do you have enough Fetchies with data to extend to 50K and 50 miles?
The time bands would probably need to be wider the longer the distance though
Can I also confess that I got a vain thrill when I saw my own profile picture in your screen grab?!
