It's been a while for me.
Ironically the last time I was there they wouldn't take it because my iron reading (I think) was too low. This was because I had ran to work that day (no-one told me). Feel a little ashamed that I've not got round to booking another appoitment.

No need to feel ashamed, PK. Just get to booking youself in again and don't run to the appointment

I'm finding all these comments about running before donating strange. Since the bloodmobile service stopped coming to work and I have to go to a community session. I've always booked my appointments at a time that allow me to come home from work, run, shower and get to the centre. I've not yet failed the iron test.

It can be detrimental to those that don't have a good base level, pushing them over the edge towards a fail on the test. The higher the intensity the greater the effect.

Fragile Do Not Bend
Yes, my level is always a bit borderline based on the blood drop test (it has a really good think about it before finally sinking), so it’s not surprising in hindsight, that a long run before donating pushed my level right to the brink of being too low.

'Cos mine didn't sink immediately, I had to do the plate in a machine test. It appears that the "it can sink in 10 seconds" has disappeared here.

Westmoors, mine was after 105 mile run. So I think it needs to be something quite long to have depleted your Hb. G

talking of donating and running... i'll be donating plasma this Thursday, having not donated blood for about 30 years. Any thoughts on how soon i'm likely to be able to run afterwards? I have no intention of running home, but is there a possibility I could run that evening or should I leave it longer?

eL Bee!
Running won't be the problem, Gordon, just be aware that the cannula insertion point is bit more likely to spring a leak. Big needle - in situ for a while!
You don't get the same effect as with donating whole blood as you don't lose any oxygen carrying capacity.
