I always get challenged when I ask for that at a pharmacy, but have never been refused it yet. I just say a doctor recommended it, which is the truth!

I think the pharmacy staff have to ask if your doctor has told you to take iron.

If you are a premenopausal woman, donate blood, and don't have haemochromatosis I'm happy to be the doctor who told you.

Fizz :-)
I told them I’d had a low count when I gave blood.

I'm veggie, don't have a good green veg diet and I drink coffee! I'm a bad bet. Like I say, I just pop iron pills for a week before I go in! :-) G

Ah, not the 300mg ferrous sulphate (?) that I was prescribed by doc, but just the health shop ones which probably have an amount that doesn't do anything except placebo! :-) G

Is there any benefit in taking ferrous fumerate if you are a meat eater but are always borderline (but pass) when being tested at a donation session?

Possibly, FDNB. I have a mixed diet that includes red meat and I usually have a tub of iron tablets (ferrous sulfate - they're not veggie because there's a non-veggie ingredient in the coating, but ferrous fumarate and ferrous gluconate are just as good) in the house and take a dose most days for a few weeks before and after donation.

Ah, I take that to mean you were only recommending the fumerate over the sulphate because it was veggie friendly and any type of iron tablets are just as good if you aren’t veggie?

I’ve been feeling especially tired since the last donation and wondered if iron supplements would help. I’m a tired person anyway but this is worse than usual. My blood was tested with the meter last time and I had the minimum level they would accept for a donation.

Sorry if I’m taking advantage and getting into “go and see your GP” territory :)

Some types of iron tablet aren't as good. Slow release iron is poorly absorbed, as is ferrous carbonate, which is in some health shop/supermarket shelf supplements. But yes, ferrous fumarate is suitable for people who are strict about avoiding non-veggie ingredients. There's often not much to choose between ferrous sulfate and ferrous fumarate in terms of cost, so it's worth asking at the counter and doing a little cost-per-pill calculation if you don't need a veggie-friendly product.
