Happy, you're figures are correct. Our local site, uses the blood dropper as an initial screen but I've had to use athe retest using a blood sample on what looks like a clear sim card with blood taken from a different finger.

Thanks for explaining why the results can be low, my diet rarely changes but training load does and it does explain why sometimes I suck at passing that hurdle and sometimes I sail through

I've had two fails in the last couple of years, both 124. I'm booked again for the end of this month and will be taking a couple of iron pills each week to try to avoid it happening again, plus maybe more eggs (I'm veggie). Unfortunately I don't think I can blame either of the near misses on training volume!

Fizz :-)
Thanks for the reminders. I’m due to give in a couple of weeks, so need to dig out the iron tablets. Had a 124 last year.

And be careful with after-dinner tea/coffee.

Another failure for me :-(

Didn't realise that having food poisoning/stomach bug last week meant I needed to wait 2 weeks. I've rebooked for 4th August which is the earliest free date. Thankfully at a nicer 12:45 which gives me time to eat properly. They were unimpressed with my scanty breakfast ;-)

I really do need a common sense transfusion!

Non-heme iron (i.e. in plants) is more difficult to absorb than heme (animal) iron. I do eat plenty of leaves and legumes but even then it's worth noting that spinach isn't a great source as the oxalic acid in it present inhibits absorption, and polyphenols in legumes are also inhibitors.

When I take an iron supplement I down it with orange juice - vit C is a good way to help absorb non-heme iron, so citrus and tomatoes are good things to include with non-heme iron meals. Strictly speaking, should also avoid coffee and especially tea with any iron-rich food as the tannin in them will also inhibit absorption.

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov is a technical description of all the biochemistry involved...

Annoying LN. But at least not an early start next time.

I'm more annoyed at myself for wasting everyone's time! :-)

If you're veggie and have periods I'd recommend a daily dose of ferrous fumarate 210mg (from the pharmacy counter) rather than fretting about the details of your diet.
