I haven't got a great record either. Eldest is 'terrified of needles'. SD gave once and fainted and hasn't gone back, and Billy gave once and fainted and is not telling on whether he will go back.

LindsD, I fainted on my first, I think your body goes, what the doobies has happened. Second time round the body might remember. It's worth a go to get them going again, but in reality it's something they must want to do. I know my wifes boss, faints every time and they asked her not to go again.

I can't remember if I wrote about it. It was a perfect storm. He'd been up all night, it was hot, we had to queue standing for over an hour and were early so had already walked around for 30 mins. He was nervous and I didn't realise. I hope he goes back, but you are right, he has to want to.

I only fainted once post-donation, and that was because I thought I was invincible and went straight from the donor centre in Glasgow to the shops, and had to have a lie down on the floor of the bookshop in which I'd been having a sneaky standing-up read of a book. Fellmouse had a fainty episode in the chair after her only donation, which isn't surprising because we'd had to wait an hour past our appointment time and it was a long time since she'd had lunch.

Ah yes, the “I’m invincible” thought process. I’ve fallen victim to that one too. Rushing off to the shops (in the heat) and back again. Fortunately I was right by the donation point (at uni) so went over to the nurses and said I was feeling a bit faint. Two of them grabbed my arms, put me on the chair that flipped my legs up and put smelling salts under my nose. More juice and biscuits were supplied :-)

Billy then had another episode at home in the afternoon when he was sick, in a lot of pain, and very scared. Hope the memory fades....

"Billy then had another episode at home in the afternoon when he was sick, in a lot of pain, and very scared. Hope the memory fades...." That wasn't good, I think that would put me off trying again. And it must of been quite distressing for you given that it should be a straightforward process.

Thinking about the process, I don't personally know of anyone who has given blood who wasn't escorted by a friend who already donates. I wonder how many lone walk ins they get, harder these days given it is all appointments at the fixed donor centre I go to.

Yes, it was pretty scary. He knows that it was due to the circumstances, though, and that he had a part to play in that he didn't sleep the night before.
