From the NHS blood and transplant site "100th - Ceremony invitation (whole blood donors), ruby donor card, commemorative medal, badge and certificate" At 75 there was a ceremony etc, but I never went accepted the invite, it might have been a good gig. I've continued doing it because sick and injured people need blood. I am always reminded of the quote " If not me, who? If not now, when?" and the B&T slogan from years ago "Do something special - Give Blood". The other scary statistic is something like 80% of the UK population can give blood yet less than 3% do. Yes the irony is that we are part of the 3%. We used to have a NHS donation team arrive near work every month but the local council charged them too much for the use of a hall so they stopped coming. |

Is it really only 3%? That's awful. I must do my bit to encourage more people to give. |

I have a dismal strike rate for blood donation with my children. Two donations in total for four young adults with 24 potential donor-years between them. In each case there is a reason which, while valid, could be overcome if giving blood was something that mattered to them.

Hey as a committed donor, I've missed a fair number of sessions in my life. Life gets in the way, "more important events", the faff of getting there and illness. But I do sometimes feel as though the NHS think they are doing me a favour rather than the other way around. But to me my donation is a 4 times a year event, to the donation team it's a 100 people a day. I am sure that 99.9% of the time they do try and make people feel special. I'll see what my 2 are like when they are old enough to give. We (wife and I) do try to encourage people at our respective places of employment but in reality you know when excuses are polite ways of saying "I'm never doing it". My wife missed 3 sessions due to people who "wanted" to give always finding a reason not to. She's gone back to just giving and as a A- it is important that she gives.

You've done better with your offspring than I have with mine, V'rap. No donations at all between the 4 of them and they're 23, 25 and 26 now, with no reasons why they shouldn't.
