The thing for me is how much it has changed. No appointments it was all turn up and wait. Screening was a doddle, no privacy, you were screened in front of the waiting room. You had to wait for a doctor to put the needle in. Post donation you got moved to a recovery bed. After 20 minutes you got escorted to the tea bar for tea and biscuits. I've seen the Nottingham Donor Centre move to its third home in that time. I saw my dad when I was 10ish give boold and it was collected in a sterilised old style milk bottle. I also thought the triage at the top of the stairs was funny, maintain social distancing when a stair case 2 wide has people standing on it and people try to leave.

Wow, ftrobbie, that's incredible! Bravo! I'm off for #33 on Thursday, which will be the first time my donation count has surpassed my age. I should just about reach #100 before I'm 50. Talk about long-term goals!

Wow, 100 is amazing, that's 47 litres if it's all whole blood donations!
The platelet donating is interesting. I don't know why but I'd always assumed it was more of a men only thing. I donated plasma recently for the covid antibody trials. It sounds like the same process?

Cheers everyone, the 100 are more or less whole blood donations. I tried plasma donation but they/I could never get the flow, the vein kept collapsing on the big plasma needle. They could never hit the vein in the middle of the arm, apparently too deep. They tried my usual donation site on the side/top of the arm but apparently it's not a strong vein and kept collapsing. So no sooner did I volunteer for platelets I got removed from the list and sent back to whole blood.

Getting to a 100 was nothing I ever planned, it was something that has just happened and it's taken 33 years almost to the day to get there. It reminds me of the popular Chinese proverb that says: “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.”

Have fun, stay safe and enjoy your day

I feel you should get a parkrun-style T shirt for 100 donations!

Some of the staff were wearing some blue NHS blood and transplant T shirts yesterday. It might be the new corporate wear. I must confess I did like the blue they used.
