But I had a particularly bad hip op when I was 16 that took about 4 hours longer than expected, so I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for blood donors (and the brilliant NHS staff who looked after me of course).

I 'donate' as it were every 6 months, but I do find that most of the time it is fairly painless, although sometimes it can hurt a bit. Maybe the nurse didn't like me.

If peoples iron levels are low then just eat some peas, broccolli or spinach a few times the week running up to the donation date and you should have plenty! Plus the added bonus of tasty food!!

Gooner, I eat loads of these veggies but they are not enough by themselves. If I am not to flunk the drop of blood in the test tube test I need to take iron supplements. Iron tablets are horrid but Spatone, which is iron dissolved in water, is enough to keep my iron topped up and not at all unplesant in fruit juice.

Spatone is my best friend in the week before I go and give blood!! Once I have my fire brigade induction out of the way on Thursday I'll be donating.
