I guess my last time was about 12 weeks ago, as I've just had a letter from them saying the mobile team will be at my regular centre (a Church Hall) this Friday. So I will train in the morning, have a decent lunch and then go to donate. :-)

For all the people on the previous page ... You can fail the iron test because the concentration of iron in your boood is not high enough. Regular training increases your blood volume and that means the concentration of iron is lower than it would be if you were less active. You have plenty of iron it's just that the test looks at the concentration. Tell them you're a runner with lots of lovely RBC and see if they'll let you donate. Alternatively drink Guinnesss.

I went to donate last week but my iron was too low (a bit of a surprise as I usually feel all proud/smug when they tell me I have really good iron levels). They gave me a letter for my doctor and said they'd invite me back in a year.

Doc said I was very anaemic and put me on iron tablets. I go for a retest of iron levels in a month. Apparently if I'm back to normal I could donate again sooner - I feel a bit guilty not donating for a whole year. :-(

anna, don't feel guilty. if your iron levels are low, as one donation nurse told me once when mine was too low, 'you need it more than we do'. you focus on getting yourself healthy first. and then once you are back to normal, you can go donate.

and think of it this way, if you hadn't been generous enough to go and try and donate, your anaemia wouldn't have been picked up so quickly. another reason to keep donating (when you are back to full fighting fit iron levels)

Last time I failed the finger test, they gave me a leaflet on why my iron levels were "low"

Mentioned eating the usual green leafed veggies and stuff. Though the medical guy said it didn't mention what else you could take..........

.......red wine and dark chocolate @)

A long time ago... I had a whole host of lovely monoclonal antibodies that saved my live 13 years ago and funnily enough nobody has wanted to share my blood since.
