Gave number 70 today. Appointment was at a donor centre about 5 miles away and since it was a lovely sunny (but cold) day I decided to cycle there and back. Donation done I headed back home, my journey coinciding with pick up time at local schools and I encountered a bit of a traffic jam so decided to head up a local, very, very steep side road. I was about half way up when I recalled the advice not to do anything too strenuous for the rest of the day. When I got to the top I could literally hear my heart pounding in my ears. Made it back home without falling off though. |

Well done, @Mountkeen ![]() I used to be very blasé about the effects of blood donations and once went out for a 6 mile run a few hours after donating. The running part was fine, but every time I had to stop to cross the road I almost hit the deck from going lightheaded. Difficult to judge whether the latest donation has had any impact on my running. On the first day my heart rate was definitely up, but otherwise it's been too icy underfoot to wear fast shoes or put in much effort., and too cold to want to stay out for more than an hour. |

Finally I'm enough weeks beyond being ill to book in for a donation.

@Velociraptor I went out for a 6km run the day after donating. Have done so in the past and felt awful so I just plodded along very sedately and felt fine. When I was in my twenties I’d think nothing of going on a strenuous hillwalk after a donation. Now I’m in my sixties I’m much more conscious of my body’s limits.

I'm aware that although I've got no day to day symptoms my cardiovascular system will complain if I make it do strenuous exercise with reduced blood volume. |

A few years ago I was running a Half Marathon on a Saturday. Going great until about 8 miles and then was shattered. Wasn’t until I finished and felt the wee pin prick mark on my finger that I remembered I donated blood on the Thursday 🙈 Eejit. Never done that again! 😂
