At the time of my first sub 3.15 ( 3.07 ) i'd run a 1.23 half although had been running 1.25-30 halfs for a couple of years by then but at the time i didn't train or perform well at marathons previous to then.
I'm now a hasbeen or neverbeen holding onto false hope of a sub 3.15 in May ;-)

I'm a very good converter - my first sub 3:15 was a Spring marathon off the back of a 1:32 Autumn half and I've never run sub-40 for 10k (PB 40:05).

I'm the opposite to Curly though - sub 3:15 was way easier for me than sub 1:30 (which I only did once and it was 1:29:57!).

I think halfs are way easier to get right and go fast. I’ve done 1:28 but I’ve never been sub 3:15, but then I’ve only run 4 marathons and I must have run 4/5 times that in HMs. Mara PB is 3:19. (Not the most positive post but Maras are hard!)

I *was* a good converter 🤣 These days I convert very slow fell races into bottles of beer!

Mr. Grumpy
I just scraped under 1:30 on a HM today, and was hoping that it would convert to a sub 3:15 next month. The last few posts don’t give me much encouragement though. I should be on for a big PB, but I suspect I’ll fall a bit short this time.

A HM mid marathon prep isn't the same as a HM best though. I ran 3:14 and pb'd at HM shortly afterwards at 1:26. I don't think I'd gone faster than 1:28 when I ran 3:14, *but* I did run 38:45ish for a 10k in the marathon build up.

If you can run sub 90 during a marathon build up and your MP runs have gone ok at sub 3:15 pace then there's no reason to not target sub 3:15 on race day; but it might depend on the day whether you get it right.

Thanks all, that’s really useful. I’ve been training towards a 3.20 in Brighton next month with the idea of 3.15 in the Autumn. Having run a sub 1.32 this morning I was seeing what kind of ball park that puts me in. I don’t think my plan has changed but I’m a lot more confident about the 3.20 now and I’ll try to get closer to 1.30 by the Autumn.

You see ^. It can be done and it’s very specific!

Neither Matt or the Grump should write themselves off. Prepare yourself for marathon and run the best race you can.

Mr. Grumpy
Good point about the different HM’s Larkim - It’s something that I hadn’t given any thought to I suppose.
My previous HM PB was from the back end of 2019, the year that I started putting more structure into my training and everything. I’m still rusty from the restrictions with COVID, but was hoping for a new set of PB’s this year, so at least the first one’s out of the way. Looking forward to a proper go at one in Manchester in May.
Good luck on your own attempt anyonebutmatt
