SM6 - Good call. We have a new parkrun started up nearby. My wife has bagsied first crack at it though and I'm going to be running with the kids.....and hopefully not at vomit-inducing pace!

5k's should not be run at vomit inducing pace imo. Gobi said Christmas tree pacing is the way to do it.

I ran my last 5k at a "comfortablish" pace, stepping up the pace in the middle of the race. When I got to 800m I caught up with the people I was chasing, put in a kick to overtake them and unfortunately blew up lol. Ended up 5 secs outside my pb in 19.33. It is a race of delicate margins.

Covered in baubles and with a fairy at the top? Gradually shedding pine needles all over the place? Introduced to the UK by a German?

Haha 😆
I agree that you probably already have it nailed on race day jmair01. I know nothing of Xmas trees but I try to run the first mile so I can chat in broken sentences, the second so I can grunt and the third the same then just get to the maximum point of pain just over the line. I find when not looking at the watch and concentrating on the feeling I run better times but maybe that is just me!

Not entirely sure about the Christmas tree thing – I vaguely remember it being something about different energy systems mean that you can go off a bit quick to get a few seconds ahead of your target pace without suffering for it later
Agree with Hunts’ about vomit inducing pace not being a good idea – not for the first 4.5 k at least. All bets are off in the run in though, and I certainly felt like throwing up for the last couple of hundred meters when I finally got under 20.
Good luck at your local parkrun jmair – hope that it is a fast course as they vary massively with 21 mins on some courses being “worth” sub-20 on others.

Christmas Tree pacing means the 1st and last km's are the quickest and the middle 3 km's are pretty even.
Something like - 3:45/3:55/3:55/3:55/3:45 plus a mad dash for the finish line

Me too Chrisull
But my pb is from a gently undulating course with three 180 degree turns in, Battersea park is the place to practice the pacing tree
