Times have been falling over the past couple of months. Now at 22.18, my recorded pb is 21.30 but I feel like I can go faster than this. Hoping to break 22 this saturday at Burnley Parkrun although I dont finish work until 3 am! eeek.

"Just need to train a bit more, eat a bit less pizza and finder a flatter course"
That's how I cracked it. I still eat pizza though. I found that a weekly circuits class concentrating on core helped greatly too. I quite fancy a pizza now

Hi all I've just joined this thread as a sub 20 5k is a target of mine. I've ran 7 Parkruns and managed to get from 25 minutes down to 22 (4.24) but this was back in March, I've not ran one since.
I run a 5.94k loop every week trying to push myself. My best time is 26.30 (4.29) from back in May and yesterday I managed 26.31 (4.29) for only the 7th time sub 27 minutes.
It has taken me 14 months to be this slow and because of this weekly tempo run it has helped me quicken my pace over various other distances. Initially I could only do this loop at 5.02 pace and thought back then I was going to die.
Now the big one. How do I improve my pace? How should I train to get faster? I have never done any core work, all I have done is run.
(I don't belong to a running club as I work evenings.)

FF - from having a quick scan of your profile you need to do more mileage. Add a couple of 4/5 mile recovery runs into your training and a long run of 10 miles and over each week. Don't add them all at once though

Hi Huntsman, thanks. My weekly mileage has gone down over the summer because of hols and other races. I also introduced twice a week fartlek training with my tempo run instead of distance running.
My weekly mileage should start to increase now with a long run on Sundays, I'm going to introduce fartleks on a Tuesday and continue with my tempo run on a Thursday. In your opinion would this work?

If you're not doing some proper speedwork - short, fast intervals - you really should, as that's going to make more difference than anything else. Up your mileage, as Huntsman says, with regular easy pace runs, and have a once weekly interval session (if necessary at the expense of the tempo run), and you'll be the other side of 20 minutes before you know it!

What is the difference between intervals and fartleks?
