In Falmouth they don't guarantee first years rooms, although they like to try and offer them to most, but when I pushed harder (not rudely though) it seemed like there was extra rooms held back for students (for unspecified reasons) that they could suddenly magic up when faced with a case of them (the uni) having messed things up. I don't know if that's the case for all universities. But I also feel there will be places available in a few weeks. Turned out I had to go higher up the managerial chain to access them to. Some of the people on my son's courses never turned up ever (halls, lectures).

SHe went through clearing as she didn't like any of the universities she had applied to originally. I think they only guarantee first years that have them as a firm choice on results day. Plus we live in London and the university is in London so I can see she's bottom of the pile. Private is way too expensive. So much dearer than university accommodation.

THanks both. I'm torn, because I'd really like her to live out and I think that it would be good for her, but she can commute and it's so bloody expensive for her to live in halls.

That's awkward, but as the others say, there will definitely be some no-shows so might be a case of being persistent and patient.

Even at the small uni I taught at there were a couple of homesick 1st years who changed their minds and moved out, as well as the no-shows

Ds2 is now thinking about going to uni abroad! I think that sounds exciting. He's doing his homework on it, maybe Germany as he speaks some German

I hope the university can add her to a waiting list Linds - I'm sure something will come up before long, even if she has to start at home.

Daughter is resolutely avoiding all thoughts of university, saying she finds it stressful. I am finding it stressful NOT talking about it and knowing we'll have to leave a lot to the last minute.

German university would be fun I'm sure!

Positive vibes to all those waiting for results today.

My daughter would sometimes find things too stressful to talk about. Sometimes it was just overwhelm and not knowing where to start. I found that tackling things one at a time helped (eg today we’re going to sort bedding). Often she just needed a guiding hand through it. (UCAS form was the worst, she almost decided not to go to uni as picking courses and filling in the form was very daunting)

Amazing results @leaguefreak - he's done so well and considering all that's been going on it's even more wonderful

I think she'll be more ready to talk about it in the week before she actually goes; we'll both be in London together then so I know it'll be easy enough to get the basics.

That's brilliant LF :-)
