Blimey what a stressful time, house moves are up there already and with accommodation searches and work contracts! Hope it works out.

I must say the whole accommodation/loan thing is not fit for purpose, we had to support N heavily in his final year as York is quite pricey. I mean they are not grants, they are loans so why don't they cover the whole amount for accommodation? But then - the tuition fees + living allowances loans model allows students to stack up huge debts, and the (ex)government's response was "only do courses that are gonna pay big bucks". Which is no response at all. The rest of Europe don't persecute their children in the same way, yet we seem to think the American model is the way to go (where Joe Biden had to waive huge amounts of student debt, quite a bit of it 6 figure amounts). And charging interest on the loans too. It needs ripping up and starting again.

The loans have changed dramatically from when they came in while I was at uni. There were no tuition fees, I got part loan/part grant. I paid it back at £45/m over 5 years, the interest rate was super low, something like 1%.

My daughter has already racked up more in interest (by a multiple of about 3) than she’s paid in the same time period.

Martin Lewis said it should really be called a graduate tax, and most people will never pay it off. But the new terms where it is longer til write-off are, IMO, appalling. It’s no wonder more kids are deciding against uni or trying to do it via an apprenticeship or company.

Totally agree. And working at a university, it's not working for them either. The whole model is broken.

Happy to report that D2 smashed her results :-) 9 in RE and 8 in History (going for a remark as very close to 9) were the highlights. Also going for remarks in Maths and Drama to push both of those from 6 to 7.

Phew!

We are paying daughter's accommodation; it's the cheapest as it's old stock which they haven't redeveloped yet, so there's not even a basin in her room. The newest blocks have en suite bathrooms and cost £207 per week.

Sorry about your daughter MM - I hope she re-takes and smashes it next time.
