Unfortunately, our uni is very pro-AI. The first patent with an AI inventor came from us, so we can only restrict its use based on "professional norms". The boundaries are very blurred.
I'm sure it has its uses, but degrees are going to be worthless in a couple of years time if we don't sort it out.

Yes, it's going to be a difficult transition in work and education, trying to come to terms with use of AI for creation, and for consumption, collation, curation, and even for insight and understanding.
Just for educators, as a contrast or comparison, in work we are happy to re-use, but with attribution or licensing, as required. But for things like computer, in addition to AI creating, we need to control it for the above legal licensing reasons but also for unintended consequences.
That's where a whole new industry or capability needs to be developed - how to direct and control AI to meet our legal, ethical and functional expectations. It's going to be messy for a decade. I hope the unintended consequences don't outstrip the controls. Hmm.
My tutee (S5) still hasn't attended school but his responsible adult at home this week was his aunt instead of dad. And she seemed quite happy and capable to work on his maths curriculum with him, which would be excellent. He's not going to get through the subject in the 1 hr a week that I can give him. G

Hey everyone, a new academic year is on the horizon (or already started for some). How are we all feeling?

First year in 25 that I don't have a child in school. I'm also not teaching - they gave my one remaining class to someone else, which I'm a bit upset about. I think it's because I refused to do one of the other classes because they wouldn't give me prep time when the content had changed significantly. So not a lot of meaning for me, although LittleD will be starting university. Weird.
My research post finishes at the end of Oct and I am currently jobless, which is shit and scary, but we are moving and I could do with a break. Plus I've got a load of other irons in the fire.
How are you feeling?

Awful that they would retaliate in that way. I know it's a bit scary to not have a post after Oct, but I really believe things happen for a reason, so I'm hopeful it will turn out OK for you in the end.
I don't have children, but it was odd when I got to the age when school friends' children were starting uni and I realised I could be teaching them.
Mixed feelings. I think I'll put it all in a buddies only blog as it's a bit too specific for an open forum. However, the last year was *hard*, so I wouldn't be surprised if I call it a day in a year or two.

I have a new pupil that I will be doing volunteer tutoring for in Maths. Think he is younger, maybe S2, so that will be new to me (from Higher S5/S6 last year). Unfortunately last year's pupil did not return to school or sit his exams, so his future is uncertain. I hope he can find his way in the future.
Linds sounds tough, but maybe a wee break will be good for you? Hope everything works out. G_g hope things are OK for you too. G

Hoping for an easier year this year: no new modules to sort out materials for, and the modules I teach on will be more spread over the year, which should mean reduction of marking bottlenecks. I’ve also got a better system for managing workload and switching off which I didn’t really start doing until April, and that really helped with balancing things and avoiding pointless rabbit holes. Student lists will arrive in a couple of weeks time, and you can tell a lot from them as to where your efforts are likely to be directed

Well through the first half of semester, just (I've had a few migraines on the way), and now there's more crud to deal with (see blog for details).
I was so excited when I started this job and now it just seems like a never ending treadmill.

Commented, but not very useful.
Sorry to hear this G_g. I don't know much about academia, but I understand publishing in recognised journals is important so this sounds very frustrating. Hope you (and your students) can find a way that works. Sorry not to have anything more constructive to comment. Best wishes,
RB, lol, see you commented at same time. Hope your year is working out.
I have only just got connected last week for first time with my new secondary pupil. It's much more basic level Maths, so I feel like I'm less help than with the more advanced stuff. However, I'll try and provide just general numerical support and general encouragement. The volunteer organisation always emphasize that the pupil just being seen, encouraged and having some attention and any support is valuable in itself. G
