First sub-17 at parkrun this morning, smashed all expectations with a 16:44. Marathon a fortnight tomorrow and this is a great confidence booster.

I've not really been doing much speedwork so this hopefully tells me the endurance side of training is working!

^ ace, that suggests you're flying for the mara.

Mid 17's of no expectations for me at parkrun. 'Leaders' were 17 dead and I was with them for the first half then faded as they pushed on.

Brunski, write up your training this year for everyone's benefit - it's clearly worked really, really well for you! :)

Cheers all.

J2R - I don't think there's any secrets really. I've always had a bit of speed but marathon training helps nail the endurance side for me...Just hoping it translates to the marathon.

I'll probably do a little pre marathon blog this week but basically I've added 5-10 miles per week to my pre-London mileage, kept most of my training easy(ish), and I run almost every day (my current streak is up to 106), but that will end before Valencia.

Very little speed work really, but quite a lot at high aerobic and threshold, not much above that!

5k is highly aerobic (I posted eslewhere that even 1500m has a high aerobic component). If you can improve your aerobic training then the chances are you'll improve at 5k, especially if you're doing the high end stuff.

37.10 for a man 3kgs over race weight only 3 weeks into winter base. Felt like Buddha running.

The bad - time isn't great

The good - it was solid 18.30 18.40 split

Ran 17:15 in my first 5k of the season, less than 2 months off my post-track (mainly 1500s) season break. The wheels came off in mile 3 with a 5:47. I used to enjoy 5ks, but that was an ordeal. Still a road PB, so happy enough. Sub 17 will have to wait until spring next year.
