Aquarius - thank you for the link and nice of you to think of me. I'm afraid to say though, I've never really 'got' opera, so won't follow it up - but thank you. Margaret enjoyed the concert - just not getting worn out with the travelling and lugging her suitcase on and off buses. I told her, next year, if she goes again, I'll collect her, as well as transporting her to it. It was a u3a showcase meeting as it was a chance for members, and non-members, to see what groups are available. I ended up helping a lady with a 'walker' around to the back of the hall and in through the back entrance. Still 8 steps to negotiate, but not as many as inside. And in pouring rain too - we both got very wet, even with our waterproof coats on. I see you got soaked to the skin when out running and had to strip off in the car. Thought it was just me did that sort of thing! Lucky you had planned ahead and brought some dry clothes with you. Might be worth asking Steve for a dry robe for Xmas? Shame the pharmacist couldn't help with those bites, but antihistamine tablets and delaying your shingles jab undoubtedly a good call. No wonder you needed a lie down after that expensive trip to the opticians.
Hillstrider - no problem with straining my back helping the less mobile u3a members. As mentioned above, I did get wet doing my good deeds. But I caught my hand on one of the folding table catches and drew blood - more irritating than painful.
OO61 - sorry if I confused things, but that boat was a model on (about 3 feet long). The only children involved are the schoolchildren who launch it and the ones who collect it.
I had my flu and COVID jabs this morning. A slight delay to be seen and jabbed (one in each arm) but other than that, it all went smoothly. Now waiting for the achey arms to kick in!
More money has arrived in my bank account - the travellers cheques I found have been processed and the money transferred back to me - and 'Ernie' has also sent me some. I've promised Margaret a meal out.

Wtnmel that explains it, thought it sounded improbable.
No money has arrived in the OO bank account. I'm trying Norrdic walking on the beach today with my wife's group organised through sustrans.
Thought it would be gentle on my legs post marathon.

OO61 - do let me know how you get on trying nordic walking. I was going to organise a taster session with someone local before my recent foot problems. Still want to try it but need to wait until I'm happy doing 'normal' walking

WtnMel Well done for assisting the lady with her walker, pit you both got wet though. It's no fun sitting through a meeting in wet clothes, I hope neither of you suffer any ill effects (apart from the cut on your hand, which I hope you remembered to clean). Did you fancy trying any of the groups being showcased?
I had a feeling the opera choir might not be your thing, but thought I'd let you know about it anyway.
Good to get both flu and Covid jabs out the way, hope your arms aren't too sore today. Nice to get that present from Ernie, we picked up a £25 prize last month and also this month.
0061 Nordic walking on the beach, that sounds a good way for your legs to recover after your marathon. How did it go (the marathon I mean)? I've never done the Blyth sands race, isn't that the one where you have to keep an eye on the tide coming in? As a slow runner I think I'd be swept away by it
Hill repeats today, 6 x 400m up a narrow path. That was the only place around here with the right gradient and distance for this workout, but it meant dodging a window cleaner on each rep who was taking up the whole width of the path with his equipment.
For those who are interested, an update on my itchy lumps - I'm sorry to say they are outstaying their welcome, but I think they may be subsiding a bit. I feel a bit better in myself today so fingers crossed they'll have gone completely for Saturday's XC (although there is some doubt whether it will go ahead due to flooding. A decision will be made tomorrow). Shingles re-booked for Monday.

Aquarius, I see that you cancelled your shingles jab, but now have an appointment on Monday. I still haven't been contacted for mine. I hope that those lumps soon clear up.
Well done for this mornings 6 x 400 metres hill reps. That window cleaner must have been a right pain😆 I hope that Saturday's XC goes ahead, and is not cancelled due to adverse conditions.
0061, Sarah is quicker than me these days, but is many years younger, in fact, all my running friends are years younger 😁
How did you get on with the Nordic walking on the beach this morning?
WtnMel, I'm glad to hear that you didn't have any problems with your back.
Good that your Covid and flu jabs went well, and I'm hoping that your arms aren't aching this morning.
Good news that money is 'flowing' into your bank account. I haven't bought any bonds for many years. I remember when my parents were alive, we used to watch the numbers being drawn on the TV. Going back even further, writing down the football scores, and checking with the coupon to see how many draws we had found. We never got the £75,000 maximum prize.
I ran 10k fartlek on roads yesterday, and 5k this morning.

Wtnmel my wife has been nordic walking for years, mainly on the local beaches, and sometimes on trails. I occasionally join her group. It's surprising how much faster you can walk with the poles and quite relaxing. Definitely worth a try. Apologies Aquarius, thought I'd mentioned the marathon. I ran well, better than expected and just under 3 hours and got a bronze in both the British and English marathon champs for my age category.
Blyth sands is unusual in that's it's a handicapped race based on age. So each 5 year category start 1 minute earlier, and women also get a better handicap than men. So the race is entertaining and throws up some unexpected winners, usually older athletes.I get a 5 minute head start this year. They usually vary the time the start around the tide but some years the tide is further in, which adds a further challenge. Personally I enjoy it but there have been awful years with bad weather and high tides. It's about 5 miles....

0061 That's a great result, Bronze in both the English and British marathon champs for your age category, you must be very happy with that. I think I'll give Blyth a miss thanks, sounds a bit too challenging for me.
XC has been cancelled, which is probably for the best as I was convinced it was on tomorrow, but it was actually meant to take place on Sunday, so I would have turned up on the wrong day (and it's quite a drive there from our place, about an hour each way). They are going to try to rearrange it towards the end of the season. I hope next weekend's XC won't be cancelled too (and I've double checked - that one is a Sunday fixture too. Mustn't forget.)

Aquarius - I almost took my golf umbrella with me to that u3a meeting .. in that heavy rain, I wished I had! That cut on my hand was very small and I think the rain cleaned it up for me I think I'm already in enough groups so I wasn't looking for any new ones at the showcase meeting. But there's a possibility of a new group of card players who belong to social cards (very easy games) to also play Canasta (which is slightly more complicated). Rose, who runs the social cards group, suggested it, but as she's already busy with other things, needs someone else to lead it. I've 'sort of' said I could lead it as it wouldn't take much organising (it would be a small group of up to 8, meeting once a month in each other's houses) but I hope someone else will volunteer instead. Well done re the hill repeats - shame about the window cleaner getting in your way - how dare he. I'm interested in your itchy lumps so sorry to hear they're still making their presence felt. Hope they go away in time for your re-booked shingles jab. I see your planned XC race has been cancelled - but since you had the wrong day in your diary, just as well as it saved you a wasted journey.
Hillstrider - I bought some premium bonds when interest rates were low and as long as my 'returns' keep pace with what I could get from a savings account, I'll keep hold of them. Well done re the 10k fartlek and 5k runs.
OO61 - I'm looking forward to trying out nordic walking, so I can get an upper body workout as well. I'm also interested to see how much faster I can walk. I have a friend on here who often pulls my leg about how I can walk faster than she can run - but she is quite a bit older than me. Well done re the marathon and getting bronze for your age category.
Margaret is suffering at the moment - a sore throat that has turned into a cold. She's happy to go ahead with our planned meet-up with her sister tomorrow at the Holiday Inn in Aylesbury. She was going to come and visit my Mum with me but says she's worried about her catching it so will sit in the car/go for a walk/grab a coffee while I'm at Mum's flat.
We were planning to go to York next Wednesday, but given Margaret's cold, we've decided to can the idea (it was already re-arranged from September). We'll think about it again in the Spring. That means Margaret misses out on her birthday treat of afternoon tea at Betty's - I'll organise something else in it's place.
I've just been to the golf club to try on some golf shoes, I thought it was size 9 I needed, which they didn't have in stock. And having tried on size 8 and 8.5 (both too tight) and size 10 (too big) that seems to be correct. So they'll order some in and fingers crossed they fit!
No after-effects from my covid and flu jabs - some very slight soreness in each arm and I felt a bit tired the following evening, but to be honest, hardly noticeable.
I walked to the newsagents this morning (1.5mls) to (a) try out my left foot (b) try out my new trainers. No after-effects so I feel more confident about going a bit further and the early-morning walks may finally be back on the agenda.

WtnMel Sorry to hear that Margaret is suffering with a sore throat and cold, maybe caught at the music festival? I hope she'll enjoy meeting up with her sister, but probably wise to stay clear of your mum. Shame Margaret will miss her birthday treat at Betty's, but she probably wouldn't enjoy it very much if she's feeling under the weather. Good that your cut wasn't anything much, can't have you both on the sick list :). I see your volunteering instincts got the better of you again, but perhaps someone else may step up to lead the proposed card group. Sounding hopeful for getting back to your longer walks.
Parkrun this morning, very cold but the woods were looking at their autumn best. Then an unscheduled flu jab for both of us. We had our jabs booked for a couple of weeks time but got a text from the surgery this morning to say they had a walk-in flu clinic until 12.30, no appointment needed, so we decided to go along. Now I just need to get my Shingles jab on Monday then with all this protection (Covid, Flu and Shingles) I'll be a Superwoman
