Yes, clearly Labour knew what they had to do and focused on that. We've talked about Labour neglecting their core here numerous times and certainly in quite a few held seats, majorities were reduced but they gained a bunch of seats in areas they focused on.

If more people thought about who was the best MP in their constituency to represent them and misunderstanding our system as voting for a president, we'd have much collaborative and less tribal system. Even without PR.

People don't misunderstand our system as voting for your constituency MP has a effect on who ends up as PM and people rightfully care about that.

In reality local stuff is dealt with via councillors.

Local stuff isn't exclusively the domain of councils and councillors.

There's plenty of local stuff that an MP deals with within their constituency - both by being a liaison with the council and by being able to take issues which interface with the state bureaucracy and government business.

Of course people do and should take into account who might be in the leadership team (it's not solely the domain of the PM - they aren't a president, despite many and the media treating them as such because its a bit lazy and easier to do so), but the point stands that we should vote for who we think is best local representative first.

To be some extend reforming how the party system works (and maybe abolishing it?!) would be more transformative than PR with the party strictures placed onto our representatives to vote in certain ways.

I was once at a election campaign event - though from memory it was a school - with Phillip Davies and every single issue that people brought up that they wanted fixing were issues for the council.

Sometimes I think politicians who want to do stuff should become councillors, those who want backhanders and free stuff should be MPs.

@rf_fozzy I don't think the point does stand as the government has way more power than your local MP.

People weren't calling for a general election to select their local MP, it was because they wanted a change in government.

I voted based on who i want in government. Only one of the candidates for MP made any effort to engage with me. I am neither here nor there with the sitting MP, but I knew they would win (50.8% of the vote as it turns out)

The Daily Fail front page called it a “Loveless Landslide”

For all the Tories complaining about the size of Labour’s vote share I would like to ask how they feel being annihilated by such a small vote share

They wouldn't be moaning if the positions were reversed.
