RD's decision affects people. Not just the impact on the day either. Soft cancellation infantilises people. A groupof adults should be able to take responsibility for negotiating themselves through a blimmin puddle. Erosion of people's expectations that they should be taking responsibility for their own safety and showing consideration to others.

Going back in time i ran/raced parkrun on days when it was dangerous. In more recent time there are more regular cancellations in less bad conditions

I did one run a half marathon in livingston that was 80% skating rink and I saw a few fallers. I was glad I took a wrong turning and only ran 12.7 miles

Curiously, I've just seen some pictures (not sure they were of the course) and read the report from Isabel Trail two weeks ago. Sounds worse then than the photograph today though hard to tell especially in context of some of fozzy's post, as it is impossible to tell the exact conditions of that section itself.

"RD's decision, full stop"

This is a silly line to take. And an unthinking, unhelpful position.

And symptomatic of the issue people have with health and safety- risk assessment and h&s should not be rigid and unthinking - it should be a live thing.

If the RD has said go ahead in the middle of a storm where the met office had issued a red warning, you'd rightly criticse them for being stupid (as I would too).

The reverse therefore must also logically be true. If you cancel for stupid reasons where you dramatically overestimate the risk to normal adults who are capable of using their brains, that must also be open for criticism.

My view is you can discuss it, but the RD is responsible for the safe running of the event and so if they think it should be cancelled then it should be cancelled. If you think the decision is wrong to be honest it doesn’t matter as they are in charge and they made the decision.

Being an RD can be very stressful at times and we should also support our RDs otherwise they are not going to want to do it if they get criticised and it’s not easy finding people to RD.

At our event we hate cancelling and so we might run when other events would cancel given the same conditions but I think that’s totally fine

Ah, a helpful explanation from Fozzy,

It's still the RD's decision
