I think there are a number of factors at play here. How deep is the puddle? What is the surface underneath (smooth tarmac/mud/potholes/etc)? What is the surrounding ground like (didn’t see the pic)? How many people typically take part? Where on the course is it (as in will the field have time to thin out before getting to it)? Something safe for 10 (or 20 or even 50) may not be for 150 or 300. As an RD I’d probably also err on the side of caution. A cancellation doesn’t mean you can’t run the course on your own, it just means that you won’t get a recognised run or time. Last winter after the snow we cancelled because of ice on the path. The ED and I had a jog around and were fine but with 150 people there would definitely have been fallers and almost certainly injuries. Yes, people need to take personal responsibility but the core team has a duty of care too. |

I agree 100% with Chunkywizard's comment. We are a parkrun which is often still going ahead when other local ones cancel but that's partly down to some of the authorities that run the various parks near us. If the council (or whoever) say the park will be closed because of a weather forecast (forecasting weather which then doesn't materialise) then the park will be closed and there is no parkrun. The authority that manages the park where I am an RD tends to leave it up to us as to whether or not to put on a parkrun. The park closes its facilities eg toilets and cafe on Christmas Day but there is still lots of access to the park via public footpaths it's up to us as a core team to decide if it should go ahead without those facilities. There have been times when our parkrun has gone ahead in conditions where had I been the RD I might well have cancelled - and I wouldn't hesitate to cancel if I thought our paths were too icy/slippery/dangerous etc even if all the other members of the core team tried to persuade me otherwise. It's always the RD's call, you can agree or not but those who then want to get nasty/personal about will probably find fewer people step up to be an RD and struggling parkruns will struggle even more and end up cancelling because there is nobody to be RD that week rather than because it is unsafe. |

And as PH says: no one is stopping anyone running 5k in a park. There just wasn't an organised event.

My first thought with a puddle is has it formed due to overflowing drains / sewage etc Is anyone going to die from not doing a parkrun for one week? |

Really? When I see a puddle my first thought is that it probably rained.

Really? When I see a puddle my first thought is that it probably rained. In terms of the reason why an event is called off. A puddle remaining / becoming standing water indicates poor drainage surely |

I see some have completely missed the point. Not a surprise.

One Thousand Odd Spiders - so is it the RD's decision? I'm not sure you've made your opinion clear.
