Our MP came along, kept a pretty low profile (ie chatted to people who recognised him, didn't bother anyone else) and then gave the volunteers some praise in the HoC. No problem with that :-)

I did have more concern about a volunteer who turned up wearing one of the blue EU flag berets. I wasn't RD, but had I been, I think I would have asked her to remove it while she was volunteering. I'm a Remainer, but I wasn't comfortable with any overt support for either side while 'representing' parkrun. I realise that volunteers may not see themselves as doing that, but I think they are.

I agree with you LD, volunteers *are* representing parkrun - they are the public face.
When I run as an official pacer in my local HM, I see myself as a representative of the race and the organisers, even though I am not paid (unless you count not having to pay to run ;-) ). Therefore, I have to conduct myself to a higher standard, and in addition try to add a little bit more to the runners' experiences.

I wouldn't know my MP if he was running beside me or not and as long he wasn't wanting me talk politics I don't care, but I see it would be a problem if it became a soap box for any group to use.

Wow - dropped that grenade and went away - lots of posts.

It's something I'm currently arguing about with one of the team.

I'd go back to my response earlier - if they are still considering inviting a bunch of political activists to provide a presence at parkrun (beyond a completely anonymous one), I'd be dropping HQ a note and let them sort it out. I'd politely inform the core team that that was what I was doing as I thought it was contrary to the spirit of parkrun and then step away. The later that sort of action gets left, the less time there will be to pick up the pieces and get the roster filled etc, so resolving it early in the week (assuming it's next weekend's event that is question) would be helpful.

If parkrun HQ think all is hunky dory, at least it will have been officially sanctioned.
