And anyone who knows my current political tubthumping will be able to guess how it stuck in my craw to be photographed for the press smiling and shaking hands with an ERG member. I'm able to suck this sort of thing up for the benefit of parkrun, though.

If parkrun locally can't engage with elected representatives to point out to them how they should support parkrun, I think that would be a poor show. Unless they are turning up for a photo op as part of political campaigning, I think engaging in that way has got to be seriously considered.

Irrespective of their personal characteristics ;-)

Our local MP has run 30 parkruns at Leicester Victoria, always keeping a low profile.

I agree, and I did engage fully. That doesn't mean that other members of my community supported this initiative.

Entirely see your point about balance, though. It sounds as though quite a lot of the community would have been behind that - was it parkrun HQ who discouraged inviting other local MPs?

The way I saw the "invite and MP" thing was it was to sell parkrun to your local MP not the other way around.

It was, but again, we had the MP for a community which has a parkrun having parkrun sold to him, because it falls in his constituency, while the community without, who have to travel to the event, is ignored.

The impression I got from HQ was that they didn't want me inviting all the local MPs down.

As Gobi says - I just want to run and drink tea/eat cake. Politics is depressing when I have to suffer it during the week. My time running is a time to get away from all that crap. By all means MPs can rock up and run but I can't see why there is any need whatsoever to let them proffer their political views - whatever their political persuasion. I don't promote my work/political ideas at parkrun so why should an MP.
