Be wise to the tricks, make sure the whole team know the rules and kill them with kindness. I always say people who have forgotten their barcode are more than welcome to go home, get their barcode and as long as I get it before I've finished processing results I'll add it (making sure I take the position token before they go home). Hopefully it makes them think is it worth the effort.
There's too much stress in the world, I'm just really polite but firm. I haven't had a run in with anyone yet! If they really won't take no for an answer from an ED they can always complain to HQ, right?

I'm strict with the rule, but other RDs are not, and other events are not - which can create issues. I also warn folk not to drop their barcode on the way round, keep it in a zip pocket or even don't carry it on them. Hard to know with folk emailing in claiming their barcode didn't scan. I give them the benefit, as it has happened to me

There's a subtlety to the no barcode, no time. It is "no scannable barcode, no time" surely?
Obviously on some days the weather will play havoc with the equipment etc, and perhaps all venues should have at least one volunteer on the parkrun app so that they can photograph unscannable barcodes, but the responsibility has to sit with the participant - if you bring a crumpled up, soggy piece of paper and expect it to scan, that's not the event's problem.

I'll take notes of soggy barcodes. Unscannable ones, I know an event that takes them off the runner so they don't bring it the next week.
On the app, the awful weather on Saturday was creating issues for us. Good old fashioned timer did the trick as rain was affecting the app

"No *printed* barcode, no time."
If you have a printed barcode, but it isn't scannable, its fine.
I once photocopied my phone's screen. It didn't scan, but it was printed so it was within the wording of the rules...

I have added "no printed barcode, no time - it has to be printed, no mobile phones, don;t even ask me" to my run briefing

If I know its going to be wet, I assign another volunteer role for scanners, and have one who just notes down the unscannables...
