This ICE excuse is silly, anyway.
I have my phone in my back pocket, with my barcode card. That would, obviously, be exactly the same device I would present should I be permitted to present a barcode on my phone rather than a printed one.
Were I to collapse, anyone coming to assist would look for my barcode card and find my ICE phone number on there.
However, they would probably remove my phone to get it, and by pressing the screen twice, withouot needing to unlock, they would have my name, address, blood type and the name and phone number of a couple of emergency contacts.
At what stage do I, as an ED, get to furtle around in the undergarments of any ladies running to discover their phone numbers? And if it's only for paramedics or such, then they'd look for NoK details on a phone anyway if one were there.

Was it a jokey or proper telling off - some folk might not have an ICE contact for whatever reason

We always have someone writing down numbers for people whose barcodes don't scan, saves a lot of time messing about trying to get some to scan. If you are a regular who has forgotten their piece of paper but know your barcode they usually accept it, after all if you have a finishing token what is the problem unless you try to do that each week?

There is no obligation on the part of most parkrunners to have ICE details on the barcode. HQ do like to jabber on about it, though. The core volunteer email mentions it almost every month.
It is a compulsory field for under 15s, though. However, there'd never be a telling off from me about it.

Just out of interest, I'm having thoughts about this app that HQ are trying to push us towards.
If you volunteer, and I were to put you on scanning or timing, and then I were to ask you to download an app onto your personal smartphone, would you be happy to do this?
Or would I be better asking people who want to volunteer to download the app if they want, then assign people to jobs if they have it?

We encourage runners to complete their ICE details online but don't complain about it not being on barcodes. We do write down barcode details if they won't scan (except for those on phones) but won't do it if someone doesn't have a barcode, however regular they are. I've had a few arguments with people over the years about it and have been amazed by how aggressive some people are. These days, barcode scanners tend to send any dissenters to me because apparently, I'm 'very good at dealing with them politely'. You usually find that the worst ones don't become regulars though.

I'd say that's a non-starter DG. Not everyone has, or wants a smartphone, and even if they do they might not have enough storage and/or data to download and app there and then

I've spoken about this exact issue with other RDs at our event - is it appropriate that we ask someone to download the app. The ED says `just use the app' but I can't if I'm RD, as I need my phone, nor am I happy asking folk to download it.
Also do we know what happens if the timer gets a call while using the app?
