And I'd expect results processing if done on site also has wifi access, so in that case there'd be no data usage from using the VV app. Not always the case, admittedly, but you really have to be the absolute penny pincher (or on an utterly terrible data tariff) to bemoan any data usage from the VV app.
The completely valid point though about using your own device, out in whatever weather, in an environment where a runner might accidentally knock your phone out of your hand and cause damage etc is a real concern - I'd happily do that, but I can understand not everyone would want that. Having said that, core teams could if they wanted to use funds to buy a couple of cheap £50 "Chinese" smartphones which would work perfectly well as VV app devices, or even put a plea out on their facebook for any old, redundant spare phones to be recycled into core team devices. It would only take a couple of devices to be passed on every couple of years or so for that to be a reasonable source of suitable devices IF the VV app use was to be the future.
On the other point about smartphones being the source of barcodes - paper has to remain the default in terms of avoiding barriers to entry. For me it's just a question of opening the opportunity to use smartphones for those who want to which would be "nice", but on the basis of it not being currently a broken system I can live without it.

Accepting barcodes on phone screens could be deemed acceptable as soon as all events are using the app to scan - we are told that the traditional scanners do not work to scan off a phone screen.
The problem would then be whether participants would get their position token scanned then faff about getting the barcode on screen, and the delays that could cause.

If they got to the scanner without having found their barcode, I'd keep scanning other people until they were ready.

"And I'd expect results processing if done on site also has wifi access" - not neccesarily, we do results on site and there's no Wifi - use a dongle or phone hotspot.
"The completely valid point though about using your own device, out in whatever weather, in an environment where a runner might accidentally knock your phone out of your hand and cause damage etc is a real concern" Agree. I don't mind using mine but am reluctant to ask people to use their £600 iPhone!!
"core teams could if they wanted to use funds to buy a couple of cheap £50 "Chinese" smartphones which would work perfectly well as VV app devices" Yep, but not all phones have a good enough camera to scan - mine doesn't
"paper has to remain the default in terms of avoiding barriers to entry" Yep. This might change one day but for now that's how it is and there must be very few people who can't get it printed somehow.

For my clumsy oaf children, if they need or want smartphones (mainly for music playing, or watching youtube videos etc) I've bought a few generations of the cheap chinese phones so that I don't get too distressed when they get trodden on or dropped down the toilet. They work surprisingly well and are really good value. They're no iPhone X or Galaxy S10, but perfectly serviceable. I'll have to check if they work as VV devices, but I'd be amazed if they didn't.

I don't run with my smartphone to parkrun for the very reason that I don't want it damaged/stolen etc. I have a very cheap Nokia (non smarthphone) which I take to events in the case that I might need to make an emergency call or I'm somewhere on my own. It certainly couldnt be used for scanning as it's not a smartphone.

as per my previous no bar code no result rant
just had a third email off the guy protesting that he should be added in - because the RD wrongly said he would so he was given duff info before run. Yes and if he had been given the right info he still wouldn't be added in without a barcode.
My calm exterior and placid manner (no laughing those that know me) are being severely tested...…… as ED I am generally not allowed to tell him to foxtrot Oscar.
