It is usually met with a few `ha ha ha, is he joking?' noises and looks. no. No I'm not.

Silly question... (and I do follow the rule, just wondering why the rule is there)... but why no barcodes on mobile phone screens?

a few reasons including the scanners used to have issues with them, some phones weren't v good images and also the ICE info wasn't there

I did notice recently that scanning using the app seemed to pick up a mobile phone barcode (and the scanner said it was usually ok). But I also noticed I don’t hear the reassuring beep when scanned from the app.
But I think the lack of easy access to ICE info is the best reason for ensuring a printed barcode.

ICE info or not does not have a bearing on whether or not the scanner can read a barcode on a mobile device, though

Also they tried to suggest some "time and motion" type evaluation that getting sweaty fingers to unlock phones which are in arm bands etc would increase queueing time length substantially. Possibly valid, possibly not.
But failure to scan properly is the biggest issue with mobile images.
As I've noted before, I used to cut off the ICE info from my barcode to make it nice and small, so that argument didn't work for me. Redundant now that I've got a wristband though which means I *do* have ICE info available.

I read (or heard) that another reason for not allowing scanning from mobile screens is that it adds time to the scanning process if people wait until they get to the head of the queue to take their phone out of their pocket, type in their unlock password, find the email with their link to their barcode, open the browser at the barcode page, then present it to the scanner, at which point it might not scan depending on the screen resolution or how bright the sun is. And that's assuming that it's a warm day so not contending with frozen fingers for all of the above. Makes sense to me.
I *think* our pr will only add people if there's a number written down, which indicates that there was probably a barcode present. I suppose people may memorise their number, but if they can remember that........
