They could have done a better job of showing the finish token scanning (ie actually shown it!) , missing that out seems oddly lax.

This is the only place I feel slightly safe talking parkrun and even here I am careful.
I have been berated for being fast. Sworn at trying to pass people and accused of swearing when not getting past people. Anyone who has seen me run hard knows I just about manage left right and thanks. Most events I do a cool down to thank Marshals. Oh got called something nasty once for cool down lap and encouraging others.
I go to parkrun mostly for cake and often jog round especially if I am with my daughter. The cafe side of the culture mattered when we started all the events we were involved in.
I'm now local to a small event and try to fit in coffee, do my volunteering and join in but I find the whole volunteers being hero's thing hard to stomach.
I volunteer as I want it to happen no other reason. I have no agenda, i dont need a t-shirt and I don't care how many times I have done it.
I just do it if and when I can.

Gobi that's such a shame and very different from anything I've seen or experienced at my parkrun.

Gobi - if you are ever in the area come and visit us at Lullingstone. We appreciate anyone who can get up the hill ( and back again ).
Times have changed and parkrun has moved on, I guess we have to move on with it but, that doesn't mean we have to like or agree to all of the changes. I look at it now with somewhat jaded eyes, not too long ago I was visiting another event where the ED had asked for feedback on the course ( reasonably flat but all off road with a few rabbit holes along the way ) and someone suggested, in all seriousness, that they have a volunteer go out pre-run with a bucket of sand to fill up all of the holes so that it was safer. It may come to that in the future, hope not.

Well, I don't know what is going on with Gobi's experiences. What I do know is that I've never had any problems being one of the faster finishers at a variety of parkruns. I do try to pass cautiously when there's significant congestion (one of my events is a 4-lapper with a narrow section) but I'm not perfect about that. But dropping a few secs from my time isn't that big a deal, there are fast 5k races for serious PB attempts. That's not to say I don't run as hard as I want for the remaining 4.95km.

Come to Orpington or Bromley Gobi, you won't get any abuse for being fast just kudos!
Maybe it's something to do with the courses too - certain (e.g. Tonbridge) are imo too narrow to properly accommodate people trying to pass, although it's only a 1 lap course so the problem doesn't occur if you're able to start and stay near the front. Personally I don't like parkruns run on narrow courses for that reason.

Guys. Remember I have been around since there was only Bushy. I think I started at number 69.
I have seen and been part of a lot.
I can list 1000 good experiences as well.
I'm still a fan of the concept I just have a lot more reservations abiut being too close to it now.

aubernette - didn't realise that you were local to Bromley - that is where some of the incidents I refer to occurred. I guess you have to be there at the moment to know what really happened. Do they still have the registration and lap turn signs that I had made - that was many years ago so I guess long gone?

The problem exists in other places, even my commute to work (whether by bike or on foot). I've been sworn at for running on a (shared) cycle track, cycling on a (shared) cycle track, for going "too fast" past a walker with a dog on a stretchy lead, by dog owners who's animal's aren't on a lead (even when I'm only running), for ringing my bell, for not ringing my bell.... the list seems endless.
In fairness, the people who abuse/shout at you, and those who complain to the press because people who shouted and abused them are all part of the problem, but are still just people. Maybe not very nice people, but there you go.
Summary: a %ge of people are prats. Ignore thme and don't let it spoil your day!
