They wouldn't say running is better than walking even though it obviously is. Runners even have less incidence of arthritis which I never tire of pointing out.

Spice dog, that time also has to include the tens of minutes that some footballers spend rolling around on the floor in agony.....

radio 4 prog "more or less" quoted stats saying some teams were running about 110km in 90 mins (many were less). So that's 10k per player. Of course some of it is competitive sprints against an opposition player and there's a lot of stopping and starting. I don't think anything useful can be read into the (modest) average speed myself.

Andrew65- Cmon England!
All I do know is that playing football for 90 minutes is bloody knackering!

Plus I would suggest it’s a lot easier to run a 10k in a straight line without interference. Maybe we should try running lots of 10 metre dashes in random directions on a football pitch to see how long it takes. I could also strap a GPS to my boy when he next plays - but he’s the goalie, so it might not be so much

Good idea Fetch. The other thing is to get someone to kick you every few minutes, then grab your shirt & pull you to the ground. And we'd need a crowd to hurl abuse.
I know - we could do that at the next Fetch mile & see how the times compare?

um - ' someone to kick you every few minutes, then grab your shirt & pull you to the ground. And we'd need a crowd to hurl abuse'. If you were to believe some of the posts on social media you might think that this already happens at many parkruns. Throw in a few wayward children, dogs and buggies and parkrun is probably more advanced than football in that respect
