Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Depending on the exact wording and way it is said I don't think there is a problem with the RD saying to the parkrunning hoard that they need more people to volunteer to enable to run to continue each week. If the comments were directed at any particular person, or even group within the general mass of parkrunners, then it's not on, but otherwise it's really just a general comment on the need for volunteers and that people should give it a go.

Normally would be better to highlight how awesome the volunteers are though and their lovely purple tshirts, rather than highlighting the negative of the non-volunteering.

Funny enough the subject came up at Dartford PR this w/e. a young lad was volunteering (I think) as part of Duke of Ed scheme. The RD pointed out that this was his 12th time of volunteering, "which I would guess is more than most people here." it was taken with good spirit.

Here's part two of the interview, which includes plenty about volunteering:

I've got no issues about appeals for volunteers (I'm a regular volunteer myself and I can't help but feel frustrated at some people that seem to take volunteers for granted), but if it's done in such a way that makes people feel the need to boo, I think it's inappropriate

Depends on the type of booing.

If it's a booing the referee type boo then it's bad, if it's a booing the pantomime dame type then it's OK.

Interesting listen, thanks Fetch. I am still unconvinced by Tom's arguments about the 'physical' benefits of marshalling or token giving, and, though I'm just guessing and could be wrong, I thought there were plenty of studies which show that to be beneficial physically a degree of raising the heart rate was necessary. Simply walking to your marshalling position is likely to be only marginally physically beneficial but I'll have to agree to disagree with him on that.

As with the 'negative' language of 'giving something back' aka volunteering. I liked the idea of wishing they'd called volunteers 'run-makers' or similar, along the lines of the London 2012 'Games Makers', but the 'community' at the Olympics was not really comparable to the community of a weekly parkrun. I'm afraid I'm still one of those people that Tom recognises may not agree with him on this!

I'm also surprised that he thinks people would be cross if, working towards their 250 milestone they suddenly found that their volunteering stints also counted. Personally, I'd be delighted (and it does show over five year's worth of commitment, so what's the problem?) Who did he focus group for that opinion I wonder?

I'd be slightly annoyed, because we normally bring cake and stuff for milestones and if volunteering stints suddenly got added to the total, I'd have passed the 250 milestone some time last year, instead of the currently expected September.
