Sad to hear of the barging incident a few pages back and hoping that it was exagerrated somewhat. We had a complaint made to our running club once that members barged past a couple, walking towards us during one of our runs.
In reality, the path we were running along was only 2 people wide, so the couple were inconvenienced for a few yards by having to walk single file, rather than side-by-side.

I attended a new parkrun last sat and listened to announcements about conflicts with cyclists. the route uses a park path which is marked one side for cyclists one for pedestrians. apparently this has lead to abuse from a cyclist about being on the wrong side. Strange how one individual (that cyclist) can change how they put on the event and makes me wonder we sometimes overcompensate based on a single complainer. we told about this at start and then had runners and marshalls hollering at us to keep to right side of the path which makes up two thirds of the course.
in my view the event is now too big to fit that number of runners down a 1.5m wide path so sadly while close to me unlikely to return as its so congested and difficult to pass people.

FurryH - unfortunately the success of parkrun is leading to many events outgrowing their venue. Have been to several in the past few months where I felt uncomfortable as a runner and concerned for general park users. To be fair, if the event uses a path that has a designated lane for cyclists then all participants should respect that and follow the marshal's instructions. I was surprised to run at one event where the route went through a long established designated dog exercise area, the only place in the park where dogs could be let off leads, one runner ran straight into a dog and didn't stop to check if it was ok and several dog owners had to sprint after their pets to keep them out of the way. With increasing numbers a lot of thought has to go into event location and routes and we need to be more considerate of others. My old local has a tight turn onto a fenced in path a few hundred metres from the start, anyone walking along that path is stuck with nowhere to move out of the way. I certainly wouldn't wish to be in that situation. Like you I have sought out less crowded events and know of several core teams that are busy working on alternatives/new events to alleviate the problem.

Our event has a lady that is making a protest about the muddy paths, by standing in the way with her dog, hoping to be barged so she can complain. She shouted at a marshall, who was 16, and said she was going to complain to the council, and our MP.
Our MP is a regular runner, and the council support the event. That said, it is worrying that it doesn't take much for conflict to rise up. All involved have been very polite to this lady, which I think is making her more angry!

When Cardiff Council tried to shut down Cardiff Blackweir I had an illuminating exchange with the Council employee at the centre of this. Her stance was that nobody should have to give way to anyone else whilst walking. My reaction was that Cardiff City Centre shopping would have to be shut down on weekends as it is impossible to walk around certain areas without taking steps to avoid walking into other people. She chose to ignore this.

Fragile Do Not Bend
I’m imagining her coming face to face with another walker going the other way, and coming to a complete stop as neither of them are prepared to give way.

On the water thing, for a lot of people starting out running, it’s difficult to get used to that dry mouth thing caused by breathing more heavily than usual. Hence the desire to carry water for short runs even if they don’t actually need it.

Reading these recent posts about giving way erc mskes me very sad. What's happened to general good manners? There is such a sense of entitlement among some people these days, they must go around waiting to be affronted. What an unpleasant attutude to life
On the parkrun outgrowing its venues point, we have probably examined every patch of open space locally, including trying out a couple of routes, but none of them have come to fruition for a variety of good reasons. I'm sure we're not the only core team longing to find an additional venue to try and ease numbers!

As a counterpoint to all the gloomy news, we had a runner who we spoke to about his behaviour (our course is 2.5 laps, and really busy at the moment, so there's lots of passing going on). Not only has he apologised unreservedly, he's also volunteered for next week.
We're all looking forward to when Great Denham starts - it'll hopefully take a few hundred runners off our hands!
