I wasn't condoning the behaviour, just putting forward a possible explanation for why they needed the drink in the first place.

On a slight tangent. For the longer runs i am addicted/attached to soft flasks - find it quite therapeutic running with one in my hand. During races they are easy to fill at water stations and result in at least one less plastic cup/bottle among the carnage for others to trip over.

Mainly through lack of planning, but also as something of an experiment, I did my 20 mile long run (ending with 3 miles around parkrun) with no drink at all until after I'd got back home. Had I had some water available I would have drunk some, but equally I didn't feel I needed it, either during the run, during the 3 minutes waiting for parkrun to start, or waiting at the end.

I know hydration is important, but made sure I was well hydrated before I set off (well, I had a large cup of coffee). Always makes me smile when people drive up to parkrun, and then get out of the car with two water bottles and are swigging away after a mile.

The drinking stuff is totally bonkers, when you see people starting parkrun with a Camelbak on as I have with no signs that they have been running already, you know the issue is nothing to do with thirst. The bottled water salesmen's propaganda dies hard.

Given the price of a Camelbak at least they won't be chucking it in the hedge!

I used to carry a drink for anything further than 3 miles when I was new to running. A security blanket :-)

I often have a bottle of water in the car which I drink on the way to parkrun, but that is more to do with the wine I may or may not have drink on a Friday night. Always use reusable bottles though, very rarely buy bottled water from a shop.

I felt really self conscious about a year ago when I'd done a 13 mile run to the start of parkrun, and I had both a camelbak and a headtorch on, despite it being daylight and only needing to run 5k! I felt like explaining to everyone I was near "I set off when it was dark on trails where I couldn't see without a headtorch, and I need to test out the backpack as I'm running an ultra in a few months"!

I'm another one who turned up on Saturday having already done some miles. No drink on the way, but I met Katie at the park, and she'd brought along a chocolate milk for me for when I finished. I have to do lots of hydrating post-run, otherwise my stomach just shuts down and leaves me with hours of discomfort. Choc milk is the only known way for me to fuel and hydrate!

I found it really useful to have distraction during the last part of my run. I like starting at the back and gradually picking my way through. Passed about 240 people with a 28 minute parkrun :-)
