Aren't you better just getting that from actual fish?

There's little evidence for fish oil supplements reducing the risk of heart disease, stroke or peripheral vascular disease and the consensus is that it's not worth bothering, and ploughing your way through ingredients lists on fish oil capsules to find out how many capsules (it'll be more than it says on the label) you'd actually have to take to get the dose of omega-three oils used in studies is tedious. Vegan "equivalents" are useful only in that they might get some sort of fat down the necks of people who are vegan for eating-disordered reasons.

The recommended intake of omega-threes can be had from eating a portion of oily fish twice a week.

I need to create a new diet thread called "The veggie-who-doesn't-cook-will-I-die diet" to see if there's anything (lazy) that I can do to avoid death and/or rickets. But obviously without actually doing anything like food preparation or cooking. :-) G

I'm now contemplating setting myself up as a diet guru for the cooking-averse fussy eater. I can see a market, and it isn't actually all that difficult to meet your nutritional needs without doing any cooking. But the flip side is that it's an expensive way to feed yourself and you might not find soulmates on the Reducing Single Use Plastic thread.

I agree with v'rap. No point in these supplements. Plenty of money being made by the companies who produce them.

I do take Vitamin D as there is some actual evidence for it.

I’m taking a pharmaceutical grade fish oil extract as part of a long term 50:50 blind trial for Jimmy’s in Leeds. It’s thought the product can act as a prophylactic against secondary cancers returning

D Tup, Does that mean you may be taking fish oil or you may be taking a 'sugar pill' equivalent?

Interesting re. glucosamine. I also am a sceptic, but I do know a bloke who gave his elderly border collie 1000mg a day mixed into its food and swore it rejuvenated the creaky old dog.
