Yeah, I agree with that too - if you have an extensive running history in your legs, picking it up again, even just for a few weeks / months, can get you back to a decent state (but in my case, I don't believe as good as before) reasonably quickly.
Might it depend on how serious your original "peak" was? If you did it at 50% or 70% effort (training I mean, not the race. The race is always 100%! ) then maybe a future 90% training regime will get you to a higher point? Or something else changes - nutrition, resilience, a coach, a different training style etc. G

My WAVA bests, and all time PBs, for mile, 5k, 10k, half and full came off the back of 5-7 months intense training following two years of sporadic training courtesy of a knee problem. That half-year, though, was probably the most solid and focused half year of my running career, partly because I was so damn happy to be able to go out and do the miles again without pain.

I don't think there is ANY reputable scientific evidence for glucosamine. I was tricked for a while in my 50s, clutching at all kinds of straws for various things!

There is no worthwhile evidence to support the use of glucosamine for anything. This isn't "absence of evidence of effect" but "evidence of absence of effect". This is to be expected as there's no plausible mechanism by which swallowing glucosamine (or rubbing it into the skin around your joints) could influence the state of your cartilage. There's also no evidence to support taking chondroitin or fish oils for joint protection.

For about a decade my WAVAs have been pretty much static. Yearly bests hovering around 68-69%. However due to my peers (at the very sharp end, those who set the best for age) at shorter distances proprotionally slowing down at a greater rate than me my mile and 5k WAVAs are marginally getting better and nudging towards 70%.
