Friend of mine critically ill following a massive heart attack yesterday. Another friend awaiting multiple surgery in Harefield. Hubby says this is what we expect from life now waiting to see who’s next in the sick list.

I'm now advising people ten years younger than me that they should accept the need for regular check-ups and maintenance rather than taking their health for granted. Which is very much "do as I say, not as I do", because my own approach to health care is more reactive than proactive.

That's sad/bad news DocMoye. Dunno about expecting nasty things from life ..sometimes expecting good/better things can assist us in making better choices in a variety of ways which may impact upon our well being. For sure there are more sick people in my age group than there were when I was twenty years younger..I think what Velo says is undoubtedly wise although I 'm not sure what kind of regular check ups my GP surgery provide..they call me in for BP every year (but I take mine every week), a PSA for prostate sometimes, poo sampling via the NHS every two years and an abdominal aneurism test as a one off once over 60. I guess I'm reactive to health concerns just like a lot of the population!

Sorry to hear about your friends Doc.

That is sound advice from V'rap. Unfortunately, one can look after oneself, with a good diet, exercise, mental attitude, and lifestyle, but idiopathic diseases or conditions can just pop up out of nowhere.

so sorry to read that, DM. So far I have had a remarkably protected life in terms of people getting badly ill all around me, but it's bound to happen unless I'm first.

Sorry to read of your friends' woes, DocMoye, best wishes all round.

Interesting from V'rap on regular check-ups and maintenance. I'm nearly 52 but have never been called in by the GP for any kind of screening, check-up or MOT. Generally I'm well, have probably been in to the GP 5 times in the last decade, and usually just to get a referral on to private health (company policy) for running injuries. I can't actually remember the last time I was properly "ill." Never had flu, get a cold once, max twice a year. Perhaps my GP sees me as low risk so I'm not getting the call-up?

I’ve never been called for any routine screening either ( I’m 50) but my friend who is forty has been called in for the works !

My friend with the heart attack is being woken up. .... further stenting of coronary arteries expected and family warned of possible hypoxic brain damage. ( he had CPR at the roadside by a GP or medic whose house he collapsed outside ) ...
