I've missed my breast screening. First time round I didn't go because I'd had a scan and mammogram just a year before for what turned out to be a benign *thing*, and next time I didn't go because I didn't feel able to take the time off work and couldn't get through to change the appointment. Rather ironic, since I have a colleague who takes a day off work to have a pedicure.

I don’t know if there is a general policy for GPs to call people in for a general check when they reach a certain age. I chose to ask for a health check when I was 51 ten years ago as I was applying for a new job and my potential employers were asking questions about my health history. I’m glad that I did as the GP picked up an underlying condition that I was unaware of as I didn’t feel unwell. I think it’s up to the individual to be proactive about having a health check as from my experience, and those of my friends and family, we’re unlikely to be invited for a checkup.

I got a letter just last week calling me in for my 'birthday month review'. I didn't bother last year but decided I would this year. Various blood tests and a BP check are involved. I don't mind though there is a feeling that the surgery *wants* to make me fit the 'worried well' demographic

I got called into the Doc's a couple of weeks ago for a health check by the practice nurse. My blood pressure was up a bit, but I don't like having it taken anyway, and especially when I've had to wait 45 mins in a waiting room full of coughing people and wailing children. I should get in touch for the results.
The nurse found it very difficult to get her head how much exercise I do. She was fine with the 1 hour a week pilates, but not with the running 40 - 60 miles a week. I think she thought I was fibbing.

I won't have that problem, jabberknit. The practice at which I'm registered has at least one current marathon-running GP and has had others in the past.

I have never been called in for a check-up and it wasn't mentioned when I turned 40.
I guess that it is different for men because we don't have to be screened with smears and mammograms. There probably is no quota or target that needs to be hit for us.

You still have bowels, Andrew.
But I don't think that starts until you're 65.
