I’m in the keen but not very good camp for most sports, too. I had a little more ability at football (the team I played with are in tier 7), but weak ankles forced me to stop playing in my late 20s. My GP then told me to keep active and running in any activity that didn’t involve twisting and turning - hence started running just as the marathon craze started but didn’t really do it seriously. Did a fair bit of orienteering (thinking running😀) but when children arrived that came to an end. Started running again with my kids and now do it because I’ve grown to enjoy it. Still totally mediocre but I’m hopeful of carrying on for a few years yet.

@57.5DOP- I think that the experience of seeing people who have reached old age but with negligible quality of life is what I was alluding to as well. I have seen far too much of that in my professional career to view advanced age as a goal in life if, particularly if that life is limited to such an extent.
A patient once said to me, "I don't fear dying, I only fear not living", and I think that there is a lot of wisdom in that.

Indeed. My father passed away last year aged 90. He had a stroke just before his 85th birthday and was basically 'absent' for the remainder. I don't fancy that, even though he seemed cheerful enough.

'overenthusiastic underachiever'. Sounds like my cricket career.

I was always vaguely competent at ball sports. But it was my running that always compensated for limited skill. So I finally settled for what I was good at.

I appreciate what you describe Andrew and of course it's so true. In my professional career I also saw the grim sides of being in advanced years with poor health and no family etc. Often there were the opposites side of that too but maybe a flippant goal such as what I mentioned was a bit silly in some ways. In the last twenty five years of my professional career (and which I'm still involved with on a voluntary basis) I have worked with people mainly between the ages of 25 and 60 who, because of erroneous lifestyle choices were/are in lousy physical health--which of course impacts on mental health. So I may say that I don't run for health reasons but actually I'm hoping that together with good overall lifestyle choices that I stay in good nik for a longer time than if I threw caution to the wind with some things. And there's also the matter of "luck"..but all I/we can do is better the odds I suppose...

Anyone tried that stupid Yanny/Laurel thing? Apparently 'young' people hear Yanny and 'old' people hear Laurel - except I hear Yanny. Must be teaching infants all these years I am tuned in to higher pitched voices!

I thought it was a male/female thing? I can clearly hear Yanny which, as I am female, seemed to be 'right' :-)

They were talking about this on the radio, I don't know where it came from but it depends on which vehicle you're listening on. They kept playing it and I heard both sounds but on different radios so it's not an age thing.
