The heavier you are the heavier you can lift in principle, Pix! (obvs it's a bit more complicated than that. - but the principle is there!)

Having made that sweeping statement I do need to add that power to weight ratio is a WONDERFUL thing for an athlete. This assumes the athlete is interested in speed. But even shot putters are better if they're faster. |

Yes, that's what I thought, pecs, delts and triceps. Garmin shows me the focus when I log pushups. It highlights the muscles that are working and the regular pushups aren't the problem. I can do 100-120 in a 5 set session. It only becomes a problem when I change the position of my arms from out at the sides to under my shoulders. Then I can barely lower myself. Maybe having a narrower stance means that more work is done by the triceps? I'll have to ask a PT, I think. |

Yikes! That's a lot of full push ups! If you're ok with dips and other triceps exercises then you're laughing! Would be interesting to see if there is some tiny tweak in position for the narrow ones that would make all the difference... you might just be attempting something impossible!

Losing weight without losing muscle is challenging when you're no longer 21, Pix. If you're aiming for a calorie deficit it becomes particularly important to do resistance training and eat enough protein to try to conserve muscle mass (you will lose some).

I certainly seem unable to do both. I have to accept an above 'race weight' to hold on to my hard gained muscle mass! I'm two or three kilos (half a stone?) heavier than the PB weight in my late 50s. It's ok.

That's a lot of push ups .... is there not a point with push ups sit ups/crunches etc that you don't gain anything from doing more? Like lower weight higher reps will improve muscle endurance but not improve strength? Is it the same concept? (stuffs oblong in mouth) |

Thanks for your input. I think I found something: According to this image, I'm usually in the hand positions 4-6 when I'm doing regular ones and when I try hand positions 2-3, I struggle. So that's due to weaker deltoids? |

EvilPixie, I'm doing the 100 pushups challenge, that's why I'm doing that many pushups. I'm currently stuck in week 3. The increase rate from day to day is 20 and I can't move on to week 4 yet. I first have to get comfortable with 100-120 per day.
